Published Date: 02 July 2009
HIBS boss John Hughes today made his third signing in just four days as midfielder Kevin McBride became the second former Falkirk star to sign on at Easter Road.
The 28-year-old joined former team-mate Patrick Cregg and Manchester United youngster Daniel Galbraith as Hughes' squad reported back for pre- season training this morning.

But heading for the exit door was Republic of Ireland winger Alan O'Brien
who has had his contract terminated by mutual agreement, the ex-Newcastle United winger having failed to make the anticipated impact in a green and white jersey under previous managers John Collins and Mixu Paatelainen.

McBride began his career at Celtic before joining Motherwell after a period on loan with the Fir Park club, making 57 appearances for the Steelmen. He had a short time at Darlington before returning to Scotland to sign for Hughes at Falkirk.

He played more than 50 times for the Bairns before becoming a free agent following the Homecoming Scottish Cup final in May.

McBride said: "I have always been a great admirer of the way Hibs aim to play the game and I can't wait to get started. The manager has certainly never hidden his own high regard for this club, now I am just delighted to be here."

Hughes, who has had Brian Rice confirmed as his assistant at Easter Road, said: "Kevin still has his best years ahead of him. He's one of the bravest boys on the ball and is not to be messed about with on the park.

"He had a good grounding at Celtic as a youth, and his ability to link defence to midfield is second to none. He's straight into training today and looking forward to pre-season."

Galashiels-born Galbraith began his career with Hearts before signing for Manchester United on his 16th birthday in August 2006 and has been selected for Scotland at every level.

After signing a two-year contract, the left-sided winger who can also play central midfield, said: "I'm delighted to be returning to Scotland and in particular Hibs. I really enjoyed my time at Manchester United but the time was right for me to seek a new challenge with first-team football my main aim.

"I know that will be a tough task in itself as there are a lot of quality players in my age group stepping up from Hibs' Under-19 side, but I've never shied away from a challenge in my career."

Hughes added: "Daniel was unlucky with injuries at Manchester United but he is very young with good energy. He has his whole career ahead of him and has shown he can play a variety of positions on the left-hand side.

"I'm really looking forward to working with him as he will provide great competition for places and I'm sure we're going to get the best out of him."

But, while Hughes was successful in luring McBride and Galbraith to Easter Road, the Hibs manager was reported to have missed out on Sunderland striker Anthony Stokes, the former Arsenal youngster whom he had on loan at Falkirk with great success. Sixteen goals in 18 games for Falkirk persuaded Sunderland to splash out £2million to the Gunners two-and-a-half years ago but he has been unable to establish himself at the Stadium of Light.

Hughes had been hoping to tempt Stokes back to Scotland on loan again but Sunderland are understood to be looking for a permanent deal to recoup some of their outlay.

Oh dear oh dear, what a shocking signing!!!

Even Falkirk fans thought he was hopeless. Following on from my comment yesterday I knew you Hobos couldn't afford Stoke.

So in summary, Fletch and O'Brien out
Cregg, Galbraith and McBride in.

Not exactly strengthening your squad is it! Although you will be gald to see the back of AOB.

Aren't you guys worried about the the quality (or lack of it) in Yogi's signings ?

Its brillant being a Jambo watching you guys sign the Falkirk "stars" This guy was hated as much as you lot hated AOB. Mind you the Flakirk fans wanted Yogi out, cause he nearly took them down you know.

I thought McBride was younger but 28, dear oh dear still another player Yogi likes and with him being another Falkirk reject it won't dent the wage structure like ratboy does. Keeps getting better and better i love the transfer window, who next yogi your granny, i heard she likes a kick about haha

9 I heard he was signing for an english side the other day can't mind who it was but if it's true he would be another good signing for Hearts. As a token gesture to the hibs maybe we should sign a Falkirk reject also, none left hibs have them all though!!

Good grief, some of you yams are so two faced and stupid it's quite bemusing at times.....

HIbs sell Fletch to an EPL side for a deal worth up to £3.5M and Hibs are a selling club, Hearts Sell Berra to a Championship side for considerably less and it's all about "Vlad playing hard ball", "great business" blah blah blah....

Hib sign two players from an other SPL side and one from Manchester United and it's all "relegation", "Hobo's for the first division"... Hearts sign a player from a relegated SPL club and another from a club whos name is only regognaisable because it's a popular holiday destination nad their world beaters.....

As for the comments that Hibs couldnt afford Stokes, what part of Sunderland wanted a permanent sell and Hibs wanted him on loan dont you get? Hibs know they can't afford the likely £2m transfer fee and therefore wanted a loan deal, Sunderland want to sell and therfore arent willing to let him go out on loan. Hibs could have afforded the loan deal had it been right but at no point did we forsee us shelling out £2M for him. Of course you yams would have found the same £2M in a heartbeat, I think not......

Hows the debt these days anyway? Still crippling is it? Still means your going to have to sell the likes of Driver does it? You really should try getting your own house in order before slavering over whats happening at Easter Road, dont you agree?

Interesting to see that it has taken Hughes no time at all to identify that midfield has been our problem area for the last 2 years. Chisolm, Rosa and O'Brien all shipped out straight away (likely to be a couple more as we are still heavy on average midfielders)

As for the players coming in my knowledge of them is fairly limited. Cregg i've seen a few times and has shown talent but had fallen out of favour last season at Falkirk, Galbraith I know zilch about (cannot fail to be an improvement on Alan though) and same for McBride (although seems not to have been well thought of by Falkirk fans). I'm happy to wait and see the midfield Hughes sets up but bringing back Zemmama and Boozy would be a smart move!

Has any club in Scotland spent a fee yet? Freebies really do seem to be the order of the day.

Perhaps but with the amount of bile that spouted on here these days it hardly seems worthwhile trying to engage anyone in a reasonable debate or bit of banter.

Sad really because there once was a time when you could actually discuss Hibs & Hearts on here in a fairly nice manner, however most of those posters have now since departed leaving the sane amongst us in an ever growing minority.

Sadly the invertabrates on here are close to dragging us all down to the same level as the majority of OF fans.

Sunderland have taken a £3million hit on two Roy Keane flops.

Michael Chopra sealed a £3m return to Cardiff - £2m less than former boss Keane paid the Bluebirds for the striker two years ago.

And Anthony Stokes is set for a £1m move to Scottish side Hibernian - half the figure shelled out for the former Arsenal forward in 2007.

Hibs will use part of the £3m Burnley paid for Scotland striker Steven Fletcher on Stokes, after Sunderland refused their bid to take the 20-year-old on a season's loan.

The baboon would like to thank all the mask wearers from Tyniecastle on their input, it has been a joy to watch the inane ramblings and utter p@sh that has been typed into these threads.

An SPL insider has revealed that Vladimir Romanov has agreed to wear a mask for a year to give a little bit of moral support to the mask wearing Hearts' support and players, Vladimir commented "Komrades, for long I have witnessed the shock on visiting fans faces and also noted the many people caught huddled up under street lights trying to avoid making contact with the Hearts support and players. And as it has been noted I have done very little for Hearts and will continue to do so, so as a gesture of goodwill I too will wear a mask therefore offering my support".

A Lithuanian spokesman declined to comment further as he did confirm seeing Vladimir getting onto his sub, but could not recognise him when he got back off the sub.

An SPL insider has cast doubt on the the goodwill gesture of Vladimir as they are unsure what he looks like now he is wearing a mask.

End of report.

Watch out, your mask is slipping.

The internet is already full of scary and frightening things - and Hearts fans that are maskless will add to this terror.

Are we simply decanting the Falkirk team that narrowly escaped relegation to Easter Road?

Is our target this year to be relegation?

Dearie me.

Wouldn't it be worth releasing some cash for Stokes? Sproule? Where's the pace going to come from this year?

It's one thing to sell an up and coming potential star like Fletch for 3 big ones. But surely we have to bring some quality back in. Grubbing around on footies ocean floor hardly suggests ambition.

Hughes can succeed here. But not if he's only going to be working with shecht.

43- Dont slag off big Makka-How many did the jambos knock past him in the derbys last year?

Undefeated in 4 games in the league last year against the jambos...It could be 8 by the end of theis coming season!

Also Hearts/hibs rejects-Paul hartley Hibs Reject-done ok with hearts until vlad sent him packing.

I have watched wee Jesus over here in Spain and trust me when its cold he wont kick a vball.Very fast but no control.A poor mans Ivan Sproule....but hey enjoy, thats all that the Jambos can afford nowadays.

#81 Hibs fans have to ask themselves what they would do in Petrie's position. After the most severe economic downturn since 1930's, do you put the £3m transfer fee into Yogi's kitty to see it squandered on a bunch of donkeys or do you stick in your pension fund and bonus.
84

Neutral Observer,

Feeney is a bit of an unsubtle bruiser like Nade, although he is probably a slightly better goalscorer. Doubt that Hearts would pay £1 million for him.

Thanks for your concern but as I stated on other story I decided that it was a good day to have a siesta - I asked God and he reckoned it was a good decision.

Roly

Disappointed by your input, my Jambo chum. Some of it almost made sense.

And to continue my pedantry from yesterday, it is a real "irritance" (sic) that some of you continue to misuse the apostrophe. You will find that it's Jambos and Hobos, no wee curly thing required.

Loving this thread. Hobos signing duds and no marks while Vlad looks set to open the war-chest big time and splash the cash on some quality players; Feeney, Hartley and Hughes.

Looks like we'll be storming over Europe as I predicted yesterday!

SKY SPORTS NEWS

This is a classic - 'oh ma sides'

Alan O'Brien has entered talks with Swindon Town after leaving Hibernian earlier this week, skysports.com understands.

The former Newcastle United youngster had his contract at Easter Road cancelled and is now on the lookout for a new club.

Having been capped five times for the senior Republic of Ireland side it is not thought the winger will be short of suitors.

O'Brien began his career at St James' Park before moving on to Scotland after making just five appearances in black and white.

He moved to Hibs in 2007 and was a regular last season before ending his spell with the SPL club in the summer.

Keen to get a new club sorted for next term, O'Brien has begun talks with Swindon boss Danny Wilson over a move to the County Ground.

Thanks for that. As if reading Rolland and his pals hilarious postings weren't enough, the AOB story may have tipped me towards the edge.....

I suspect that the AOB scenario is not quite as doom and gloom as some may suggest.... AOB was a player signed on a decent wage but one with huge add ons - ie, appearance, win bonus etc. Poor AOB didn't quite make the money he thought he would and (hate to say this but) according to a source, opted to quit. He had a reasonable deal put in front of him to walk but not a HUGELY generous one.

End product - Another wage freed up, AOB no more. Not bad really.

I have a meeting tomorrow and will have to supress a giggle when they reach the end of the agenda and have AOB (Any Other Business).

Sit back and watch the Hearts sign a couple more quality players, the usual guff spouted from the braindead hordes like yourself about how bad they are, and then watch us rip the division up next season. I just hope the hobbos can stay up similar to what Yogi hughes did at Falkirk on the last day of the season, would miss the derbies like.

Should football fans be prevented from going to away games?
No it’s only a small minority who are violent and you’ll never stop it.
Yes, the hooliganism must be stamped out.
Maybe but really the police need more resources to tackle the thugs
