Published Date: 10 May 2008
HIBS' UEFA Cup dream finally came to an end today as goals from Celtic skipper Stephen McManus and Scott McDonald robbed them of the point they needed to keep their hope of overhauling third-placed Motherwell on the final day of the season alive.
The Easter Road side went into this match knowing they needed at least a draw to keep their UEFA Cup hopes alive after third-placed Motherwell's win over Aberdeen at Fir Park.

But McManus struck in the 37th minute to maintain Celtic's own aspirat
ions of retaining their SPL title.

Hibs were dealt a further blow when Martin Canning was sent off for a second bookable offence with seven minutes remaining and Celtic took full advantage of their numerical superiority as McDonald nipped in at the back post to head home a second.

And deep into added-on time Hibs were reduced to nine men as Ian Murray earned a straight red card for a blatant trip on Aiden McGeady.

Hibs began with the 4-5-1 formation which served them so well against Rangers last Sunday, boss Mixu Paatelainen's clear intention being to frustrate Celtic and hit on the break, a tactic which showed considerable promise in the opening minutes as Steven Fletcher sent a glancing header wide before Hoops goalkeeper Artur Boruc was forced to race from his area to clear as Ross Campbell threatened to get on the end of a through ball.

And then Boruc was forced to beat away rising shot from Dean Shiels at his near post.

Celtic had begun unexpectedly slowly but should have gone ahead after eight minutes when Scott McDonald picked out his fellow striker Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink only for the big Dutchman to steer a precise header wide of target.

Andy McNeil kept Hibs on level terms when he pulled off a terrific save, diving low to his right to claw away a netbound header from Gary Caldwell as Celtic, seeking to open up a four-point gap once again on Rangers at the top of the table began to crank up the pressure.

Canning came up with a goalsaving tackle as Vennegoor of Hesselink latched onto a clever flick from McDonald but, again, it was Hibs hit-on-the-break ploy which almost paid dividends as Campbell fed the ball in to Fletcher who turned Caldwell and unleashed a dipping shot from 18 yards which Boruc was forced to turn over the bar.

Hibs were temporarily reduced to ten men after 29 minutes when Chris Hogg, returning after knee ligament damage, was forced to head to the dressingroom for attention after taking Vennegoor of Hesselink's arm across his face. Hogg returned seven minutes later, just in time to see Celtic take the lead as McManus powered home a header from Shunsuke Nakamura's corner.

The Japanese star almost doubled Celtic's lead two minutes from the interval, crashing a tremendous free-kick from 30 yards off McNeil's left hand post with the Hibs goalkeeper beaten.

McDonald should have made it two for Celtic in the 47th minute as Nakamura's clever pass left him with only McNeil to beat. The little Aussie rounded the Hibs goalkeeper only to see his shot taken off the line by Ian Murray. The ball fell kindly for the former Motherwell striker but with team-mates in support he elected to shoot for the near post only for Murray to block again.

Nakamura himself again went close to increasing Celtic's lead with another terrific free-kick but on this occasion McNeil, at full stretch, managed to push the ball round the post.

For their part, Hibs were continuing to knock the ball around neatly enough but with Fletcher operating as a lone striker they were rarely unable to create the openings they had enjoyed in the early phases of the game with Celtic well aware of the danger conceding a goal would bring to their SPL title hopes.

And Hibs almost grabbed that Euro lifeline in the 66th minute when Rob Jones, beyond the back post, headed John Rankin's corner back across goal. Guillaume Beuzelin got his boot to the ball but Boruc was once again able to get his hands to it as it threatened to creep in under his bar.

Boruc once more came to his team's rescue as Hibs substitute Clayton Donaldson, with his first touch of the ball, drove in a right-footed shot which the big Pole just managed to scramble round his right hand post.

Hibs hopes of taking that vital point all but disappeared as Canning, having already been booked for a foul on McGeady, was red carded by referee Dougie McDonald after going in with his studs showing on Robson who, to his credit, immediately jumped back to his feet.

Celtic, however, put the game beyond Hibs in the 87th minute as McDonald stole in at the back post to nod home a second goal before Murray joined Canning for an early bath, the second time in three games Hibs have had two players sent off in a match.

Mixu had the right team on the day and only the break of the ball prevented us from taking something from the game. Canning's 2 yellows were soft and Murray saw "red" and reverted back to his days in the west.
In January who would have thought we would have been in a position to get into the Uefa Cup !!!
The games at Utd and Aberdeen sealed our fate.

Watched the game on tele. Hibs looked really good, lot of nice football created a lot of chances, but never had that killer instinct. Things look not to bad for next season,i hope!

#3 Balls of Steel: Third force? Why? You are not 3rd, you are 5th and not too late to scrape 6th. Yet another year in Europe without the Hobos. Is this all Hibs can do considering this is supposed to be their best season. Rather pathetic but there you go.

I can do it too,cos my truck is bigger than your truck so there. Big does not mean better by the way, otherwise you would be in the top six. But yer no.And the wee, but perfectly team is. GGTTH.

Really enjoyed the game and thought Hibs did ok and played some nice stuff. Our weaknesses were there for all to see though and got thoroughly exposed. We could do with some full backs so Canning and Murray can play in the middle and some midfielders who are more agressive and track back properly. Robson and Hartely really ran it in the middle McGeady and Nakamura had far too much space.

I thought Beuzelin was outstanding today, the best he's played all season by a mile. Unfortunatey it's probably because he's about to leave and wants to ensure he gets some good offers but some of skills were fantastic.

Still I have faith in our MANAGER to sort it out our weakneses over the summer. Shame the Motherwell game won't mean much but still looking forard to it.

#27 Actually it's usually your cohorts that have these threads shut down. As for McCurry there have been about three or four refs helping celtc this season. If it wasn't for cheating referees Rangers would have won the league ages ago.
29

sonofcosmos,

glasgow 12/05/2008 08:29:59
#28...you show your bias ..it is a variety of idiots from both sides that get these threads closed with some of the filth they post...to say its one side is just silly..as for referees what is different is that someone inside the spl is saying referees show bias in favour of rangers ..you might not agree but many do and this has been brought into the public domain..
also just as aan aside ..why does noel; hunt get booed when he touches the ball against rangers ??

mark23,

As nothing at stake in the last game v M'well Hope Mixu takes the chance to give McCormack, Chisolm, Campbell, Hanlon and Stevenson a game, maybe also give young 17yr old Kurtis Byrne the last 10 mins. No point in risking Nish getting booked and suspended for next season, boozy more than likely offski so no point playing him etc etc.
Also want to complain about Ian Murray's ridiculous sending off, surely the Ref knew he was going to blow full time 30 secs later so why not just give him a yellow, it was a stupid foul rather than a dirty one by a frustrated player on a losing side, that kind of decision shows half these Refs have probably never played the game in their lives.
31

huggs,

12/05/2008 08:44:50
Murray deserved the sending off rules are rules
First minute last minute same rules apply
Its Murray you should be having a pop at not the Ref

Unbelievable that you think the refs only help one half of the the old bigot firm. Refs have bent over backwards to help both you lot for as long as I have been attending football. It's just with TV coverage they are exposed much more as the cheats they are and always have been. Nothing will change. The glasgow biased SFA will hammer Levin and the real culprit in all of this, the cheat himself, McCurry will carry on cheating. There is no doubt in my mind that McCurry cheated.

Maybe its the cynic in me but maybe Murrays just too tight to pay for getting his holiday changed to suit the revised end of season.

#32

Yes imo the refs are not particularly biased - they help BOTH sides of the Old Firm equally.

The Wookie,

A team completly out of control - players getting red card's by acting like spolit kids and not supposed professional athletes - the example from the touchline is being reflected by the players - no discipline or guidence from the management.

After showing signs of a "Real" challange, which as usual fizzles out, qualification for the Inter tattieis all you have to show - now off you go with the rest of the bottom feeders and play at being a big team - once you have played in the Champion's League qualifiers, give me a call.

Today i've got the hangover from last nights celebration of 10 years since the big team won a the real cup!!!!

Yep - It's still good to be a Jambo - there are worse things in life.......Like being a Hibby

106 in a row - I feel your pain!!!!

#33 good point about murray..last seconds 2-0 down..my season ends here ...BOOT !!!
regards your second point..i agree the old firm get more breaks /decisions from referees..but i would argue strongly that the decisions are not spread equally...x

hibbywul,

12/05/2008 11:05:41
I would say we are both "wee teams" who have had a bad season and must improve. 6th and 8th (regardless of points) is not acceptable to teams who should be 3rd and 4th.
37

King Konte,

12/05/2008 11:14:57
Mixu got team totally wrong yesterday. Cant believe he started with Ross Campbell. Not good enough for that level just now im afraid. Farm him out on loan next season to get used to the physicalities of the game. Would probably come back a better player for it. Desparately need another striker and more creativity in midfield for next season. Thought Boozy and Rankin were outstanding yesterday. Would be a tragedy to lose Boozy in summer by not trying hard enough to keep him.

#38 honestly if the old firm get so many breaks you really dont have to make any up...you can suggest hartley was lucky..but as this thread suggests not many hibs fans have too much difficultywith the sending offs,..x

THE ANERLEY HIBBY,

Oh what a difference a few weeks make ! I was fairly confident of 8/9 points from the 15 on offer & now we'll be lucky to get 5 . I really think 7 or 8 would have done it but we blew it big time . However I thought for long spells we were very good yesterday but like a lot of Hibby's was mystified why Mixu startted with Campbell , he's 2/3 seasons off being ready for this level . Should have been Benji or Nish , would have been happy for either . For all those who have been saying Boozy shouldn't play I hope you have eaten your words , the gut is pure class & ran Mcgeady & Shields for MOM . It will be a shame when/if he leaves us . Next season need another midfielder with flair & agression & somebody over 25. Another striker & another defender . Get shot of Donaldson , Kerr , O'Brian , Gatoosi , Zerabi & jury is still out on Moraise ...
