THE tattoo on his right arm says – in Portuguese – "only god can judge me" but Hearts fans can also look forward to running the rule over new signing Jesus Manuel Santana Abreu.
The man known as Suso became the first Hearts signing of the summer to be unveiled yesterday and revealed enough to suggest he could soon become a crowd favourite at Tynecastle. He certainly indicated that Csaba Laszlo's side are set to be given the boost of the injection of some adventure after a season which saw Hearts routinely described as hard-working, if often uninspiring.

Not that it hampered them when it came to achieving their objectives. Third place was secured and few could argue that it was not deserved. But Hearts fans will surely relish the thought of some more inventiveness being added to the team's play, something Suso's capture appears to anticipate. Some may wish to make an association with a player such as Juanjo, another Spaniard who had the ability to light up matches when in a maroon jersey and who shared Suso's slight physique.

He signed over a decade ago and in his three years at Tynecastle perhaps did not shine often enough. Suso, however, is determined to put the work in after signing a three-year deal with Hearts. He is under no illusion about what awaits him in Scotland. After all, his agent, Antonio Carlo, is a former football writer in this country. But he is confident he can stand up for himself in this new environment and thrill the fans at the same time.

He is a right-sided midfielder who likes to get forward, and scored nine goals last season when on loan from Tenerife at UD Fuerteventura in the third tier of Spanish football.

"My favourite thing to do is go one on one and try and beat the opponent," he said. "That is the fun bit for me in football."

It is an admirable manifesto for a 24-year who is embarking on a new life in a country he admits he knows little about. The switch in styles of football will be marked but then Suso is at the right stage of his career to make such a bold move. He first learned that the move to Hearts could be a possibility in December, but the deal was not confirmed until a fortnight ago.

"It wasn't a difficult decision to make," he said. "My representative kept me in touch with the situation. There was no rush."

The prospect of European football enticed Suso, as did the thought of basing himself in Edinburgh. Not even the reputation for Scottish football as a graveyard for ball players could put him off. He knows that when married to a strong work ethic, mercurial talent can flourish.

"I know the game is very physical here in Scotland," he said. "Other than that, I don't know so much so will have to learn quickly." The fast and furious aspect of Scottish football does not fill him with fear, however. "It does not worry me a great deal," he said. "Football is football. I will have to work a lot but that's my aim – to work hard and help the team. Hopefully the goals will come along based on this hard work."

Refreshingly, Suso shrugged when asked about those other Spaniards who have already made the move to Scotland. Instead he raised the bar and mentioned Raul as an inspiration, and pretty much left it there. He simply wishes to furrow his own path, although the presence of Rubén Palazuelos in the Hearts dressing room will at least help him cope with the language barrier. A translator helped him through yesterday's first press conference.

"Nacho Novo is reasonably well known in football and his success here has been well documented," said Suso. "There have been other Spanish players such as Marc Crosas who have played in Scotland. I want to work hard to make a success here for myself. That is all I am concerned about.

"The player I would like to model myself on is Raul of Read Madrid. The Spanish players who have come to England are not particularly ones I would want to model myself on."

Meanwhile, Hearts have welcomed German midfielder Tibor Heber to their Riccarton training base on a two-day trial. The 23 year-old is another attacking midfielder and spent last season with Bundesliga 2 side Alemennia Aachen, who Hearts will face during next week's tour in Germany.

Heber on a two day trial? How can you adequately judge a player on a two day trial at the start of pre-season? All they'll be doing at that point is warm-ups, stretching and, maybe, be playing keepy-uppy.

As for Suso, I've actually heard of him. The Spanish language TV channels here cover Spanish lower leagues a bit. He's quite well rated, although not LIGA A quality. Hope he does well, although most of the left-backs in the SPL would be in Saughton if they acted in the street the way they do on the pitch. We'll see what he's made of in the dog days of January and February.

Anyone that is pretentious enough to have 'only God can judge me' tattooed on themselves anywhere is a twonk.

I'm not sure about this Jesus guy, I mean I read his book, but it never mentioned anything about him wanting to play in the SPL.

Also he's been at Hearts for over 24 hours and they haven't put a 10m price tag on him yet. That can't be good.

A right back a centre half and everyone knows we need a goalscorer.
When are we going to see movement on this front, pre season has now started and i am getting a little concerned

Romanov promised a lot when he fronted the buy out.

He purchased the club on a loan set against the value of the assets and he has subsequently lived the life of Riley on a spend spend spend lifestyle with the bill ending up at Tynecastle.
A £35 million one to date.

Im not refering to Romanov alone.
This is a team of scammers who have rookied Hearts
and who are waiting to cash in again.

Meanwhile they have a bit of a laugh by appeasing fans with a "signing" from the bqack of beyond in the Spanish mountains.

If Darren Brown ever needs an understudy he can call on Romanov as conning people is his speciality.

Loving all these comments from expats (can we call you Scotland rejects?) about a player they've never seen, moving to a club they don't watch or support, playing in a country they rarely visit. And yet somehow they think they have enough information to be able to give an opinion on this! So I guess moving abroad just increases the bitterness of the average Hibs fan, is that it?

#29, what are you slavering on about?

So you must be some kind of expert on Spanish Third division pool c players then? You must have a staggering knowledge of every player in Europe because you live on a xenophobic wee island that's part of it, right?

Honestly, I just said he's a plonker cos of his stupid and pretensious tattoo. Then you turn up and fire insults off...

Why do supporters of teams wearing green seem to be infatuated by their nearest rivals finances.

I guess when you look at this past seasons and where the teams in green finished in the SPL league and cup I suppose its understandable.

#1 LIGA A quality??
Here in Spain it's called La Primera!!
Just for the record, this guy will find it difficult going in the SPL as it's traditionally a punt upfield league whereas Spanish football is far more technical. Having said that I'm up for anything that changes the boring scenario of the SPL ie: the weegie dominance!
35

my chosen name is not available...,

02/07/2009 08:55:59
#32 I didn't pass opinion on the guy (contracted to Tenerife) and I'm not interested in his tattoos. For someone who appears to be well-travelled your the one displaying xenophobia.

Sandaza of Dundee Utd came from that league, as did Juanjo. Not great players but certainly good enough for the SPL. Colin Cameron came from Raith Rovers. Ivan Sproule came from Institut. Since when did the league indicate the quality of the player? The Barcelona and Real Madrid B Teams play in that league - I'm guessing the general standard of playing ability is higher than half of our league.

I normally try not to respond as it it normally just encourages him....but tommytommy seems desperate to keep going with his latest theory that there is no speculation about player transfers to Hearts therefore they must be bust because Romanov has taken £35 million in cash out of Hearts and put it in his back pocket therefore all Hearts fans are complicit in fraud and likely to be sent to jail because they havent bought out Romanov / refused to support their team and boycotted all matches / change their allegiance to a club owned by someone honest and open that tells their supporters more than they need to.

Anyway..... its pure speculation....probably wont happen.... but
