Laszlo meets Romanov to discuss potential new signings

Published Date: 25 July 2008
HEARTS manager Csaba Laszlo has discussed a lengthy list of transfer targets with Vladimir Romanov after the Tynecastle majority shareholder flew into Germany before Wednesday's 6-0 win over a Rheingau select side. Laszlo said: "We have discussed some possibilities. We have a lot of names and maybe as soon as possible we can bring in some new players. But before we have anything clear, I don't like to talk about this."
Laszlo expects to make Uganda midfielder David Obua his first signing if he is granted a work permit. But the proposed switch for the 24-year-old is far from complete as Obua does not meet the required qualifications to be granted a UK permit.

Hav
ing been capped 22 times and an influential performer for Uganda, the left-sided player fulfils the legal requirement of appearing in 75 per cent of a country's competitive fixtures in the previous two years. But, additionally, that country must be within Fifa's top 70 ranking and Uganda are currently 97th. Hearts are therefore likely to have their initial application rejected and will have to appeal.

Obua, denied a debut as a trialist in Hearts' 6-0 win over a local Rheingau select on Wednesday due to a rib injury, is expected to learn his fate soon.

An SFA spokesman said: "If the player does not meet the work-permit criteria, and I don't think Uganda do, Hearts would have to appeal. They would have to request an appeal from the Border Agency, who gather the information and then advise us to accommodate an independent panel. It's usually made up of former players and representatives from the SFA and SPL."

There was good news over the left-sided player when X-rays showed his rib injury was not serious, and he could be in action in tonight's clash against Kaiserslautern.

Meanwhile, Deividas Cesnauskis has been given permission to fly home for a few days following the birth of his daughter.

"then advise us to accommodate an independent panel. It's usually made up of former players and representatives from the SFA and SPL."

Don't bother wasting the cash Hearts.

We all know the "independent" panel will be made out of Andy Walker, Grant Stott, Dougie McDonald, Paul Kane and Riley.

Can Hearts appeal the appeal to a higher body than the SFA? Maybe the Scottish Sewage Trust? If the "independent" panel is made up of SFA and SPL old boys then we haven't got a prayer.

Still, on the plus side, it looks like Romanov and Laszlo are developing a good working relationship - long may it continue!

There is a direct quote from Laszlo today in Glasgow paper that he is going to Kaunus, watch a match and if he sees a good player will take him to Hearts.

I suppose we should have anticipated that Romanov would continue to exert influence on any new manager about where he should look for signing targets. I suspect Kaunus would not be a natural starting point for new signings for 99.99% of independent football managers.

Let's hope that he has the ability to say no and cast the net a little futher, but it must be a concern that Romanov is already pushing him in a direction that it is highly unlikely without him being influenced, that he would naturally have gone.

#10 "I'd like to see Kaunas against Rangers and if I see a very good player then I'll bring them to Hearts." is the exact quote.

What exactly is the problem with that? It seems pretty reasonable to me.

Hasn't the net already been cast further? Obua didn't come from Kaunas did he?

I'm sure you were perfectly aware that #1 was referring to the meagre 25000 (was actually 23000)fans who turned up at Murrayfield, incomparison to the 50000+ who turned up to see Hearts play Barca. I'm not here just to slag off the poor old Hibees, however, this is just another stat that confirms who the biggest team in Edinburgh is.
#1 It was 1902: No TV coverage, if there is film coverage there will be no sound (talkies not invented yet), and most certainly no aerial shots.

The exact quotes are taken from Csabas interview with Hearts world. Not an Interview with a weegie paper.

"The manager admitted he will assess possible options from within the FBK Kaunas squad, from whom a number of players are currently on loan."

"I would like to see Kaunas against Rangers and if it is possible that we see a very good player maybe we could bring them to Hearts," he suggested. "If we see in the games and it is possible to transfer them to Hearts then we will do it.

"I can tell you that we are making very good progress at the moment.

"The most important thing is to play successful football and the owner is, I think, satisfied if the team wins."

"Maybe a lot of people talk about Mr Romanov but we decide together," he said. "Even today and tomorrow we will sit together and maybe after tomorrow we have results we can present for everybody. We want to present good and successful players. This is the most important thing.

"I don't want players who want to come here to finish their career. I need hungry players."
13

GrahamL,

Blimey, it's quiet round here today! 25/07/2008 09:24:11
#10 To be fair, we all know the situation at Kaunas - any player Hearts want, Hearts get. The manager should look at the players there and see if there's any he wants - he'd be negligent if he didn't. The noises Csaba has been making so far suggest to me that he is intending on managing the club like a proper manager would, so I'm not at all concerned by him checking the Kaunas players, I'd expect him to have a wee look at Ripo too. If Vlad keeps his nose out of the team, and no players are foisted on the new boss, then it's all good.

Big if mind.
14

LionheartFodithman,

There is absolutely nothing wrong with bringing players over from Kaunas IF they are used in the right way.
If kaunus are to be used as our feeder club what is wrong with bringing the players over and watching them train and cherry pick the best and let them have a run out in the reserves,do it ******* properly instead of shipping them over and chucking them in them straight in the 1st team.

HA HA HAAAAA!!!! can't stop larfing.

SHUN THE PLUM!!!!!

i suppose it was inevitable that players would be considered from cow'n'ass. i'm quite happy for laszlo to take any player he wants, but only based on how they perform against rankers in the CL qually. at least then they will be playing against good players and he will have a reasonable reference point to be able to judge how good they are. it's no good bringing them over based on their performances in the lithuanian league, beniusis for example scored lots of goals over there and......... need i say more about that?

as long as we get a couple of quality strikers from somewhere then we are in business.

16

Who?,

25/07/2008 09:41:57
I neither think its a bad idea to take a look at kanaus, lets face it velicka isnt a bad player and when miko first joined he looked a decent prospect and helped improve the team for a few months until his ban.

In some ways i would like some of the talent to go in the other direction. Kanaus play summer football so to me it would make sence to get some of the younger prospects out there to play for a few months during our close season. Some first team exposure allowing them to play competitive games and maintain a good level of fitness would help them push for a first team place when the new season starts up in scotland.

There is nothing wrong with the kanaus link but i feel it could be better exploited.
17

ZICO KIDD,

One quote from Csaba today discussing his relationship with romanov "we don't go behind anybodys back and we don't tell anybody bad things about the club". We all know how much romanov doesn't like that. He also said that new signings are not for him to deal with now, he has submitted his proposals to romanovs team. Naothe r quote " If Mr Romanov has an idea he will give me a call". I'm sure he'll be hering a few ideas in phonec calls from Lithuania.
Basically he knows the score, romanov still in control, will let the guy coach, any pronlems discuss with romanov then admit he's right and don't talk to press.

Spot on totally agree, and good idea about sending some of the younger lads across. The Kaunas/Hearts link could be better used and hopefully Csaba will do so.

What he is basically saying is he will cherry pick from Kaunas. Unlike before when they arriived by the lorry load and the manager told to get on with it, he at least will be picking players he has seen, and picking the best.
19

ValdasTheMan,

Edinburgh 25/07/2008 09:49:15
No problem with Kaunas being a feeder team, the problem is the Lithuanian league isn't the same level as the SPL. Therefore, the number of players that we should be bringing in theory should be small. That isn't what has happened over the last few years.

Up the bar, drop the numbers
20

GrahamL,

25/07/2008 09:52:38
#17 Good call.
There's a fair few youngsters who aren't that close to the first team that could be better served playing competitive football for Kaunas over the summer, and maybe getting a few matches for Hearts towards the end of our season. It would be good to see a few do that - Copil strikes me as an obvious example, if he's homesick and not close to the Hearts first team. Get him over to Lithuania, it's got to be easier for him to get back and see his mum too!
21

ValdasTheMan,

Edinburgh 25/07/2008 09:54:21
#17 It would certainly be useful for those players that need to improve their condition over the summer(Nade!).

However, is it better to send young players 000's of miles to play, or loan them to 1st division (or SPL) clubs? Is the 1st div. of a similar standard to the Liga A (Honest question, I don't know the answer?)
22

GrahamL,

25/07/2008 09:58:05
#22 It might make them work harder once they get back home!
"Knuckle down, start pushing for the first team, or it's another summer holiday in Kaunas for you!"

Seriously though, it'd probably be better for them to play in Scotland if they could get a loan deal arranged, but if no-one wants them Kaunas would be better than sticking in the reserves.

Surely if we have to think about sending players away to teams on loan abroad then they arent good enough for us,either in attitude or ability.
Fair enough to send young lads out to lower league sides but only to gain experience in the Scottish game.

#27 I don't know, I'm not a big fan of reserve matches to be honest, fine for keeping players on the fringes of the first team fit - but if players aren't going to get into the first team I'd rather they went somewhere to experience competitive football. And, yeah, ideally they would go to Scottish clubs - only problem is the Scottish club has to want the player - with Kaunas we can be pretty sure they'll accept the player, and depending on how meddlesome Vlad is with them, he should get a good few games.
Not ideal, but we do have this link with Kaunas, and it does seem to me that there's a benefit of it that we're not exploiting.

Hearts continued pre-season preparations in Germany today with the arrival of Mike Tullberg from Reggina.

The 24 year old played previously for Aarhus in Denmark and joined the Italian Serie A outfit last year.

#34 At the risk of drawing wildly inappropriate comparisons - Man United have a relationship with a Belgian club where a lot of their youngsters go over and get first team experience there before coming back and challenging for the first team. Not necessarily a one-way street, but needs to be properly managed and well communicated with the players I suspect. And that may prove the stumbling block...

"Hibs reeling after Barca mauling"

"Hibs manager Mixu Paatelainen insists his side's confidence has not been shattered by the 6-0 thrashing at the hands of Barcelona."

"We knew we were facing one of the best teams in the world and we got a real lesson," said Paatelainen.

"It was a disappointment for myself and the players but we will be fine when the Kilmarnock game comes around."

I think that hearts should look to exploit the relationship with kanaus.

As i said in my post #17 we could use it to send a select few young fringe players there maybe a month or 6 weeks over the summer to allow them to play some first team games, maybe get some proper one-to-one coaching to improve their strenths and work on any weaknesses provideing them with a bit of confidence so that when preseason starts in the UK they hit the ground running.

There should also be a place for sending players out on loan to other scottish/ UK clubs during the season. IMO having a link with a club who's domestic season is during our close season is a synergy that should be used and exploited.
