Published Date: 01 July 2008
HEARTS have invoked a clause in Mauricio Pinilla's three-year contract allowing them to release the striker following two injury-plagued years at Tynecastle.
The Chilean internationalist left Riccarton for the last time today after the club terminated his contract. Speaking exclusively to the Evening News, Pinilla confirmed that the three-year deal he signed in April included a clause entitling Hearts to
terminate the agreement on or before June 30.

"I signed for three years but Hearts had the option to end the contract up until June 30. They told me recently they wanted to change something in my contract and I wouldn't accept the changes," he said.

"I don't want to speak about it too much. I understand their decision and I can't speak bad about Hearts because they were very good to me. It's sad but it's part of football."

As revealed by the Evening News, Pinilla recently undertook an extended stay in Lithuania in order to hone his physical fitness. He stayed as a guest of Vladimir Romanov, Hearts' majority shareholder, who intended to ready him for the new season with the help of specially employed fitness experts.

Having assessed his condition personally, Romanov ordained that the South American be freed after just eight appearances in two years with Hearts.

"My fitness is okay. I was in Lithuania to do some special work but not with the football. I'm ready for the start of the season and I'm looking for a new club," maintained Pinilla.

"I have three or four options in countries like Portugal and Italy so am waiting for confirmation. I will meet my agent in Italy to discuss it.

"I spent a lot of time injured at Hearts and I was preparing to play the games next season. I feel sorry that I did not play more. I would have liked to show the people my ability but I can't now.

"I was very happy in Edinburgh because the Hearts supporters always told me they wanted me to play, that I was a good player. They seemed to like me but it's difficult when you only play eight games in two years."

Of all the nonsense that has gone on at Tynecastle in the last couple of years, this has to take the biscuit.

Not only did Romanov stick by this guy despite all his faults for 2 years, he paid his injury rehabilitation and the looney bin fees. This is on top of the £12,000 a week that he has been on. Not only this but he bought out the rest of his contract with Inter Milan. And then invited him to Lithuania for a little pre-season holiday!!!

Just as it finally became possible that the fans might see this supposed potential that Pinnilla has, Romanov offloads him for nothing. How Romanov made any money in the business world absolutely dumbfounds me.

What an absolute farce. Despite the fact that Pinnilla is a nutjob it would only have made sense to give him a run in the first team.

So who are the strikers on our books now? Elliot and Nade the wonder duo. The strikers who don’t score goals.

Think I may just become a Spartans fan I am finished with this circus .

What about the release clause of £8m? What a bummer - he was such a massive player for us! The frightening thing was that he was going to be the main striker for this season.

What a season we have in store!

Mmm, correct me if I'm wrong Vic but this was the player that us Hibees were supposed to be 'bricking it over'. I'm pretty sure you said he was better than 'anything' we have. Even though he never played 1 good game.

Like some of the others it beggars belief how Romanov can make money with some of these decisions.
Or does it?

All well and good, but you don't the details of the change to his contract. It could have been something outrageous - with Vlad you never know. He may be right to have told VR to shove it, or he maybe he should have just agreed to it. Sadly, we'll probably never EVER know.

Income from matches wont really make that much difference to be honest. Purchase of season tickets wont affect him. Whats 10000 300's (average?) after tax.
Its hard not to be paranoid now, frankly he either appears not to care, but why bother searching the market Europe wide and then fly them to his home?
It doesnt add up, I reckon he is just raving mental and doesnt give a hoot what anyone else thinks or does.
Until someone can offer him a ludicrous price for the club we are stuck regardless.
If you want to protest by not buying a ticket fine, but I will go and make my protest inside and public.

I hear what you are saying and I thought long and hard, but, I was coming out of games angry and it was pi55ing me off for the rest of the weekend, that I can do without. That and the increase in aggro, too many people not allowed to pass comment at a game without some tw4t trying to give you are hard time. Just a horrible atmosphere last season...

Hope it gets better...

11 Comment from Victor.

Hearts appear to have asked him to change the terms of his contract and he's refused.
on that basis we are well shot of him.

Even at this stage and although competely contradicting
his previous posts on this talented player Victor tries to get a positive spin on this farce.Amazing.

To the genuine Hearts supporters outwith the muck rakers and agitators on this forum,I wish you and your club all the best for the future. Hopefully a future without Romanov. Scotland and Edinburgh need HMFC.
Get some action underway, times running out.
25

McStumpy,

Edinburgh 01/07/2008 12:52:32
This is indeed the straw that broke the camel's last biscuit.

You have to respect people who support the club by buying season tickets, but in doing so they are endorsing this madness. An opportunity to send Romanov a message has been badly missed, so cue another season of badness and madness.
26

Newcastle Jambo,

01/07/2008 12:54:01
I would love to know what it was they wanted to change in his contract. Why Romanov feels he can treat employees like slaves and expect anything positive to come from it is beyond me. The entire Pinilla debacle has been a shambles from day 1. A player who should never have been signed in the first place.
27

victorian of gorgie ,

01/07/2008 13:00:06
#25, it seems that you are the only agitator here semac. i'm not trying to put a positive spin on it, i'm only saying that we are better off without him because he has thrown back all the faith put in him back in our faces.

he is a quality footballer.

how those are contradictory, only you will know.

up to your usual standard semac, not very bright.

28

Whats the script?,

Wheatfield G 01/07/2008 13:06:59
surely VR wanted to pay Pinilla on a performance related pay i.e. play more than 8 games in 2 years. if thats the case not a bad decision to let him go, despite the fact we have already spent £567m on the lad already.
29

Chas Niceass,

01/07/2008 13:12:46
#24 I have no problem with that either. Its purely an individual decision on how much you can bear. I feel its misguided that buying a season ticket actually influences Romanov. I dont think it would bother him, if anything less people to worry about bringing in more Eastern Euro players on cheap wages, carrying on the downward spiral.
There are no easy answers right now for any Hearts fan.

This is big cutting costs exercises for Hearts. They must save big money so they remove all player with big salary.

Why not recruit all of Gretnas team? The last ever game they play they have a good victory. They also are used to club running as shambles with no wages for workers so will fit well with same culture in Hearts.

And if Hearts team business collapse Gretnas player will know of feeling already so they will help other people at Hearts.

It is really a good solution for all I think.

Those Gretna players showed a lot more fight and spirit in the final game of last season than the divots that turned out for us.
