Gretna 1 - 0 Hearts: Skelton ensures beleaguered Gretna bow out on a high

IF THERE'S been a more doleful fixture in the short history of the SPL than this melancholy match then the organisers would have needed to give away complimentary packets of tissues at the turnstiles. As Gretna brushed away the tears and raised a few cheers after completing what was expected to be their final game in senior football, Hearts also brought the curtain down last night on their worst league campaign in a decade.
Gretna wanted to go out on a positive note and at least achieved that target thanks to a splendid goal in time added on for injury from their longest serving player, Gavin Skelton. Gathering the ball inside the penalty box, the midfield player thrash
ed a left-foot shot past Steve Banks into the roof of the net. It was a spectacular way to go out.

To their credit, the Hearts' followers joined the home side's support in applauding Gretna's players as they left the field for the last time in the SPL.The victory came against the run of play since Gretna fell out of contention in the second half against a Hearts side which played with far more energy after Gary Glen was sent off.

Unless a buyer for Gretna be found by Saturday, then the club will go out of business. According to caretaker manager Mick Wadsworth, there's no sign of a white knight riding to the rescue. "We are staring down the barrel," he said. Player contracts will either expire later this week or be terminated.

As for Hearts, on the evidence of this display, where they go next is anyone's guess. The faithful few in the crowd of 1,090 who watched such a hollow performance can only keep their fingers crossed better times lie ahead for the Gorgie club. Just over two years since these rivals contested the Scottish Cup final at Hampden in front of more than 51,000 spectators, the changing fortunes of the clubs were reflected in a turn-out so sparse the match could almost have taken place behind closed doors. Those who did make the effort were all accommodated in the main stand.

Only Devidas Cesnauskis of the side which brought the Cup back to Tynecastle was still involved with Hearts, while Skelton was Gretna's sole survivor.

On a bare, bumpy pitch, the standard of football was never likely to be free-flowing and the early stages of the contest were episodic. This was more of a concern for Gretna, who were more coherent going forward than a Hearts side which relied on long balls to their young strikers, Glen and Jamie Mole.

After Nicky Deverdics screwed a shot wide from a promising position six yards out from the near post, Brendan McGill squandered a decent opportunity to put the home side in front. Hearts were just as likely to struggle with the quirky bounces and a howler from Christos Karipidis presented Deverdics with a clear look at goal. His diagonal shot scraped wide of a post. There were occasional flashes of aggression from the visitors but no passages of sustained control.

Perhaps the nearest thing to emotion from Hearts in the first-half came when Glen reacted angrily to a challenge from Craig Barr. The 18-year-old displayed the misjudgement of youth as he back-heeled a retaliatory kick at the Gretna player's chest. Referee John Underhill immediately brandished a red card.

Although Hearts were livelier with ten men than a full complement, Gretna were unfortunate not to go in front when McGill's cross was headed firmly by Deverdics. Banks couldn't hold the ball and Griffiths, who was deemed offside, bundled the ball over the line.

Since Glen's dismissal, Hearts had asked Mole to play up on his own with support from Kingston and Cesnauskis. It was reasonably effective because Stevie Frail's men had more of the game. But, although they were outplayed for most of the second half, it was Gretna who got the big finish they wanted when Skelton sent them out on a winning note.

Gretna: Fleming (Krysiak 64), Barr, Griffiths, Hall, Naughton, McGill, Osman, Meynell, Skelton, Deverdics, Hogg (Taylor 84). Subs not used: Murray, Fisher, Robinson, Sharples, Schultz-Eklund.

Hearts: Banks, Thomson, Karipidis, Zaliukas (McGowan 73), Wallace, Screpis (Palazuelos 70), Kingston, Stewart, Cesnauskis (Ivaskevicius 70), Mole, Glen. Subs not used: Ridgers, Goncalves, Rapnik, Husband.

Really just a bad night for the SPL. The whole Gretna thing has been a joke this season. And at the end of the season there are far more questions than answers for Hearts.

If Vlad has an active summer things might turn round. If he does nothing then where do they go from here?

"Really just a bad night for the SPL"

What nonsense, one of the best laughs I've had in years.

All aboard the happy train... Believe... Vlad-I-Mir Romanov Vlad-I-Mir Romanov.. We are unbeatable... Edinburghs big team, Barcelona friendlies, waiting lists for season tickets, never ever losing 5-0 to anyone, Champions League winners, world cup stars.

How's that all working out for you ?

Thanks for a great end of season.

#5 I think you'll find what goes around comes around and just as the Jambos who actually believed the Champions League winners thing (about as many as the Hibees who rate Alan O'Brien) got their come-uppance, so the gloating Hibees (who haven't actually got anything to gloat about apart from finishing above us, unlike gloat worthy achievements such as a SC win and 2nd place) will get theirs. We've got plenty of material already - conveyor belt of talent, best-run club, no debt, flair team, all Scottish team... you sure you can live up to all that?

#6 How mature of you.

In all seriousness you need to organise and protest about the state of your club.

We've had the man defying tanks in Tiananamen Square, black Power salutes were done in the '68 Olympics.

I would suggest that you get two overweight tramps in cheap shell suits to stage a playground style square go outside the staduim, whilst a scruffy wee old man clutching a Lidl's bag kicks a Russian hat up and down McLeod Street.

#9 Why on earth would we ask Hibs fans for their support?

In all seriousness, did you organise mass boycotts and so on when you had an even worse season than ours in '98 and actually got relegated? Didn't think so. What about the time around then when you finished in the relegation spot but were saved by a rule change, or the time you had to win a play-off to stay in the top league? Didn't think so. And all that with the same resources as your nearest and dearest neighbours who were busy winning the Scottish Cup, playing in Europe and other such fun pursuits you can only dream about.

Relegation, play-off and the rule change seasons came about due to serious cutbacks in paying of debts incurred by a previous regime. It's a hard one to take at the time, but it is called facing reality. Ask any fan of Aberdeen, motherwell ect and they will tell you the same thing, they have all been there or thereabouts recently.
Fans are more inclined to stick with the team when they know what is going on.

"what goes around comes around" You are seriously deluded if you think the good times are coming back round any time soon. Do you think that with proposed cutbacks in your wage bill that you will be better next year. No-one in the league fears the Jambos anymore. next season will be much like this one for you.

Honestly brother the time to kick hats is upon you. Get to it.

The comments about getting behind your team no matter what is a sound and decent thing to do, but not when the reason for your downfall continues to destroy the club you love.

I know that Hearts fans are lost in despair at the moment and are quite rightly not going to take any rubbish from their rivals.

However, I don't know why they seem to think that next season will magically be so different to this season. Especially when everything remains the same.

Maybe it's just that football conviction that there is a small light at the end of the tunnel. Even though we all know that "deep down" it's a train coming.

Happy close season to all of you.

10#--What about the time around then when you finished in the relegation spot but were saved by a rule change--

Season 1990-91? In your imagination. Hibs finished second from bottom in what was to be a one-up-one-down season. Hearts failing to win promotion in season 1981-82, now that was pathetic.

No ones gloating about Hibs here - just p*ssing themselves laughing at the end Hearts' Champions League winning season.

Not even Catholic Jambo could try to find a positive for us today. Please don't - it would just be embarrasing for all.

Those supporters who were wanting a derby at end of season if Hearts finished above Hibs on points (despite any of our points in last 5 games being against the fellow dross teams this season) - please don't come up with another way to show how small minded and pathetic some supporters are.

Made right decision in not renewing season ticket until Vlad shows some commitment. There is not a single tangible thing Vlad has done in 2 years to give any hope for a better season next year.

Last two games have been the worst I've seen and that includes watching Hearts get relegated 3 times. I don't think that the re-introduction of Stewart and these 2 terrible performances are not un-related, he has such a negative effect on the team.

Hopefully these last two games will make it impossible for "Shaggy" to be manager next season. No new manager, no season ticket renewal.

#20. Two strong Edinburgh teams? When was the last time the hobos made any kind of impression in the league? The hobos have not managed runners-up since 1975, yeah, the hobos are a strong team for Edinburgh!!

It's reasonable for us Hearts supporters to ask the question...are our players and our "manager" actually any better than the Gretna's, Kilmarnock's and Falkirk's ?
I think we are not.
There's too much hype about certain players at Tynie, when in fact they are pretty mediocre.
One or two have shown themselves to be uninterested in recent games, and that is shameful.
What's also reprehensible is the lack of information coming out of the club.
The AGM was a fiasco, the Q&A with Shaggy was pointless.
Frails Pre-Match and post match comments are total spin, and results and performances have generally been terrible.
Shaggy, Korobotchup and co. have failed this club and its supporters. Once upon a time Mr Romanov would not have tollerated it, and indeed did not, at one stage, tolerate us being fourth. So we need to see significant changes at the top and in the playing staff.
I am happy to provide my list of duds. Right now there aint enough time to churn them all out.

A very apt end to a disasterous season. I only hope that the bottom 6 displays we've put in have convinced Vlad that Frail is not the man to manage Hearts next season!

The only ray of light just now is the hope that the close season will see the appointment of a good manager. With that addition alone, we would be in with a shout of 3rd spot next season, as our squad has has much talent as the other also rans, they just lack in motivation. If a new manager is appointed, and is given even a small transfer budget, then next season might realy be interesting.

If, on the other hand, the close season is used to send Frail off to get his badges so he can continue as manager, and no/few new players are brought in, then I think next season will be much the same as this one; Mid-table mediocrity with a 50:50 chance of top or bottom 6.

This summer will show whether or not Vlad has any real interest in developing Hearts as a footie club. He doesn't even have to spend millions on players to demonstrate this, he just has to get the right manager in, and leave him alone to get on with running the football team.

Nope Im still here lad.....

I dont really need to make a valid point today as your teams performace last night says it all for me.

Stop clutching at straws & try dealing in reality for once. Your club is in terminal decline and is sinking faster than the Titanic....

Yours and several of your like minded hearts followers are now just bitter & twisted beyond all belief...

Hibs aint great & I'm not happy with our own season but I'd much rather be in my position than yours and thats the real issue here isnt it? Deep down you all know youd rather be in Hibs position of stability where at least there is scope for improvement without needing to resort to a "boom or bust" mentality.

Instead you sit there and harp on about days gone by and "past glories" and spout your "big team, Wee team" drivel as your club lurches from one disaster to the next, perhaps you'll only realise what a shocking state your club is in if come next season theres no new manager and your sitting propping up the rest of the SPL and teetering on the brink of relegation.

Tell you what though, relegations not so bad, it certainly woke us up and whilst we're far from perfect it certainly alerted the power brokers at ER to the fact that things had to chnge and slowly they hve, for the better.

That valid enough for you now?

I suspect it is you who will not reply as your mums shouting on you to get into the car for the school run.

Regardless of opposition, and i do mean that sincerly, well done to Gretna for at least giving their few remaining fans one last memory to take away with them.

It's easy to look at this result and condemn the season that Hearts have just had, but think it is far more important to reflect on the rollercoaster ride that has been Gretna F.C.
Going from non-league to the SC final and SPL to now a very uncertain future is a story that will only be fully told in the passage of time. My heart goes out to any true supporter of theirs...

And while I'm sure it's cold comfort, if any, to Hearts fans, there will, at least be a next season to reflect on in 2009...

#64 - Nice sense of perspective there. The impending demise of Gretna is a sad day for Scottish football and if anything similar was to happen to us (or anyone else for that matter) it would be an even blacker day. The game up here cannot afford to lose any of it's senior clubs or it's going to end up like the League of Ireland.

Maybe the future is that the OF play in a league all of their own. With CL qualification guaranteed and just 4 OF derbies to contend with this will eliminate at a stroke fixture congestion and give them an even playing field to compete with Europe's best.

Meanwhile the rest of Scottish football will have a more competitive (and possibly part-time) league which will bring on the younger players destined to be fed to the OF.

In the meantime at least we tried to show some ambition beyond settling for mid-table mediocrity. OK, it may not have come off, but we did try and if only Vlad had kept his fingers out then who knows? Thank God it's the end of the season.

#70 Very true. In some ways it's fitting that - if Gretna are to fold at the weekend - they win their last game, and the goal comes from a player who's experienced the whole rollercoaster ride. Of course, I'd have rather it happened against a different team...
I genuinely hope that they find a way out of it, but it doesn't look good right now.

That doesnt make me thick. I made an observation and the proceeded to make another one anyway as is my perogative.

I'm not apologising to you for what I said yesterday as I was again merley making an observation as to your statement accusing me of having an inferiority complex when I suggested that your choice of name perhaps indicated a similar inferiority on your own part.

Please be assured however that this was not an attack on your religious beliefs in any way whatsoever and in hindsight perhaps your psyedonom does in fact deserve credit as you obviously wish to show the diversity of all football fans and that what leaning your religious stance has should have no bearing on which football club you support. That is admirable at least.

Sadly however as I'm a Hobo I'm obviously not allowed to have opinions about anything as I'm automatically branded thick, a hobonomics expert or some other derisory term. Its only Hearts fans who can have opinions about Hearts or Hibs and intersperse this with some banter or winding up of the opposition.

If a "hobo" does it hes the scum of the earth, a racist, bigot, thick or anything else you fancy levelling at them?

73 - Alright J-ree? I know today's a hard day and you have to put on a defensive front to the usual gloaters that inhabit both teams' forums BUT the last time we played Hearts won 1-0 in a shocking game which was an embarrassment to this famous tie. However, you did get two games at Tynie and we would have loved to host you a second time at ER (where I think you've won once in the past 6 years?) but alas...

Chin up, its over now : )

bangor are in uefa cup they won sheep cup.Vlad pays 6 million for land which means he owns from gorgie rd to railway and wheatfield to mcleod st must be worth 40 million.he paid about 20 million for club debts took in about 16 million in transfers so to walk away with 20 to 30 million is not far of mark.the club started to go down hill the day he got the shares first thing he done was sack burley.the man is a con wake up to it.

Is there a Folkes article out today? I really hope there is, always look forward to it. I wonder if he will have a wee go at Hibs like he usually does to try a deflect the attention away from the capitals bottom 6 team. Just like many Jambos are doing above.

Ronaldo, I bet that 7th place would be nice now eh....

A couple of questions for those convinced that Vlad is going to cash in all Hearts assets, take the money and disappear off into the sunset...

How does this fit in with his plans to open a branch of Ukio Bankas in the UK? Noone will use the bank if he destroys Hearts.
If he doesn't intend to expand into the UK any more, why are Ukio Bankas still sponsoring Hearts? That's money going the wrong way for no reason.

And, a second question, how do you dispose of a subsidiary company (Hearts) without damaging the parent (UBIG)?

Can anyone here tell me, a reasonably well educated Hibs supporter, just what has Romanov actually done at Tynecastle?
I've read the stories, and listened to the comments, but underneath it all, what has he actually done?
When he started, with Gordon, Presley, Hartley, Burley, Anderson and others all on board, things were looking good. Second in the league was good. Scottish Cup win (by penalties, after extra time against a club two divisions lower) was lucky, but then what?
Free scarves for schoolkids, community projects, increased stand capacity... all sound good, all come to nothing.
Increased ST sales, waiting lists, World Cup stars, Champions League, big name manager.... the list seems endless.
The reality of it came through clearly last night. Playing relegated insolvent Gretna in front of 1000 people on a Tuesday night. That really is the pits, and that really is not what you were promised.
Two years ago, when the signs were beginning to show I asked here what Romanov was about - He has no personal interest in Hearts (Hearts were the third or fourth club he tried to buy). He is a banker. Bankers are in business to make money. He certainly has his own agenda and it is not in line with the Hearts supporters wishes.
Fans here constantly refer to the hopes of a new manager (Frail used to be the golden boy, but everyone is now turning against him - that suits Vlad perfectly, he has someone to blame), but there will be no new manager. Ask yourself, seriously, what sort of man would be prepared to put his reputation and livelihood on the line to work for Vladimir Romanov?

I've got to say, I'm perplexed at the attitude of many Hearts supporters who seem to think that things will get better. Can someone tell me how?

Jambo-ree,

#84 Fully prepared, as at the moment there simply is no alternative in sight. What's your ideas then, or is it easier to ask questions than provide answers?

If Hearts were to disappear then it would sadden me greatly and leave a void in Saturday afternoons but it would not be the end of my world. Life goes on and despite what Shankley thought, there are many things in life more important that football (well in may life anyway, can't speak for the saddos who are never off these threads all day long).

What it would mean is that I'd simply give up entirely on the Scottish game. There are lots of deluded Hibees around who genuinely seem to think that all Jambos would become Hibees overnight and drive them on to success. Ain't gonna happen.

This is now crunch time for Vlad. His A plan and B plan have demonstrably failed so he has to make a move one way or the other. We shall see.

#83 Agree with you - Hibs were so bad that day it made us look good - hence the laughter. Truth is we've both had a sh1tty season but, for a change, ours was sh1ttier than yours.

89 - Are we even sure his plans to open a branch of his bank (at a time of global economic downturn) are likely to proceed in the immediate future? Other than a wee office in Castle St, I haven't really seen too much about it.

Also, I don't intend this as a dig but I would have thought his bank would have been his first priority in his adventure over here. His failure to open a branch would make me concerned for the further plans of the Main Stand development and the future of the football team.

I'd just like this oportunity to correct the poor grammar on the hearts official site...

"... Ivaskevicius should have shot, we don't and within twenty seconds we're 1-0 down. Not even the game, just that little 20 second period sums up the whole season..."

This should have course have read...

"... Ivaskevicius should be shot, he is in the top ten worst players ever to pull on a Hearts jersey and is only here because of his nationality. His incompetence meant we didn't score and as a result 20 seconds later we are facing a 1-0 scoreline that we are incapable of reversing because our players don't give a sh1t. Not even the game, just that little 20 second period sums up the whole season..."

Surely that is a more accurate description... are we to believe that 'Shaggy' is that poor a coach that he 'honestly' thinks that Ketstutis is a player who should be anywhere near the hearts team?... Or is someone else still picking the team?

Which ever of the above scenarios is the correct one they both point to the same thing... Change is needed... NEW MANAGER NOW!!

#88 Lenny - I'd understand all the gloating if Hibs had actually achieved anything of note this season other than simply heading us in the league.

Just a smokescreen for Hibs own shortcomings this season I think i.e. "we've not been as bad as you so that makes us good" mentality. It doesn't; it just makes you not as bad.

#92 - Have had a date when we are going bust from them yet?

First off I'm not entirly convinced that Vlad is going to destroy Hearts but right now if he does have a master plan for making ou an all conquering side then its the wierdest plan I've ever seen.

To answer your question about the Ukio branch in Edinburgh... This still remains to be seen, when and indeed IF it happens this would be a statement IMO that hes not going anywhere fast, however this hasnt arrived yet and is just talk. As for Ukio "sponsoring" hearts, that would be a bit like "Farmer Autocare" sponsoring Hibs wouldnt it? Any money arriving at the club from such a sponsor is in real terms just from your owner anyway and isnt an extra revenue stream at all. Do you know how much the Ukio "deal" is worth in real terms by any chance?

Your last question is easy.... As UBIG as no ral prescence in the UK to dispose of Hearts and put them into liquidiation would not harm UBIG at all. Hearts are a UK Ltd company, UBIG are Lithuanian. The reaches of the insolvency courts has no effect on them.

Further to that if UBIG or Ukio decide to open branches or other ventures in the UK down south perhaps do you think that most prospective customers in these areas would give a monkeys about the demise of a Scottish football club? No, sadly they wouldnt.

Of course though I'm thick, inolve myself with hobonomics, am a bigot and have no clue about anything so I await the usual derisory replies from the usual suspects on here.
79

Jubilee,

91 - Yeah, fully agree that we've both been poor this season and the difference wasn't necessarily on the park. However, Hibs went through two phases this season where the strikers looked incisive in front of goal and that got us into our (perhaps exaggerated) position.

I don't think Hearts enjoyed similar periods and the sale of Velicka basically ended any chance of that happening towards the end of the season.

At least your season is over now - we have to wait another 8 days before I can forget all about it (for 4 long weeks - and they say the PLAYERS need a break!)

97 - Yeah, I think the fact that Ukio is on the shirts again next season shows a failure for the PR company Hearts employed around Christmas time to come up with a suitably "big" name.

I would suggest having Ukio on the shirt is much the same as having "Hearts" written in big capital letters - any money you receive will end up back in their pockets through interest/repayments anyway.

#98 You're 100% correct on the Velicka sale. Not only did we miss him for his goals but for his whole attitude to games. But then he wasn't actually ours to keep or dispose of.

Only 4 weeks off and the Euro championships to fill them? That's no break at all, but enjoy anyway.
85

GrahamL,

14/05/2008 10:33:06
#97 Ukio sponsoring Hearts - OK, I don't know how much for but if Vlad is taking money out of Hearts, why would he move ANY in? Especially when he could have found another sponsor who would have brought in outside money, which he could have then pocketed. Somehow. Apparently.

And, I don't understand the full scope of insolvency law, but I don't believe you can just wake up one day and decide part of your company is insolvent and declare bankruptcy. The parent company has to be responsible, and either the whole group goes bankrupt or none of it does. Hearts may be a UK company, UBIG are Lithuanian. We're all in the EU though, so I'd be pretty confident the UK courts could get to a Lithuanian company.

Either Frail lied so that wins on the board looked good on his CV and gave him more chance of the Hearts job.
OR
Vlad lied and used the games to showcase some of the players that are "For Sale". (Substitutions like bringing on Ivaskevicius etc.)

EITHER WAY , SOMEBODY HAS BL00DY WELL LIED TO US AGAIN.

Thats post of the day IMO.

Football clubs are vastly different animals to any other type of business in reality with fr greater issues thn most other business.

Perhaps he has just made a total shop front of it all and now doesnt know how to get back out of it as hes alienated the entire management community from the club with his meddeling in team affairs.

What would he do now though if this was the case as the problem of him offloading Hearts to someone else is far greater than the one the pie man faced now that the debt has rocketed even higher. Theres not many willing to pay the amount of money thats now needed to put Hearts back on a level financial playing field and those with that sort of investment capital will most likey see far better investments (i.e one that doesnt involve a massive debt in the first place) elsewhere.

#103 - Aye ah know hes bang out of order trying to making a reasoned point on this thread ;-)

#102 "The UKIO sponsorship money is a paper transaction.
Hearts get with the left hand and Ukio take with the right hand.
Its a matter of pressing computor keys."

Let's assume for a moment that you're right. And Vlad does have a clever way of taking all the money out of Hearts. Why would he go to the hassle of moving money from Ukio Bankas to Hearts, then back again for a net profit of £0? Why not get another company to give money to Hearts which he could then squirrel away, and then he could make even more money?

The bank branch - ah yes, this old chestnut. Nothing much happening here it seems, but allegedly an Edinburgh branch of Vlad's bank is still on the cards. No other bank has ever seen it necessary to own a football club before opening a branch in the UK, but for some reason Jambos are keen to convince themselves that this is the reason Hearts won't be left high and dry.

As for UKIO paying to be shirt sponsor - of course they're not paying!!
91

Jubilee,

14/05/2008 10:41:41
#105 To maintain the sense of scale the club needs a sponsor and its possible that the alternatives Romanov had to choose from didn't inspire. Ukio was always going to be a fall back and no doubt is being used as a next-to-last resort.

His continued interest in Hearts no doubt stems from his continued expansion plans in the UK for Ukio. If he decides that this gamble isn't worth the risk, I fear for Hearts.

As long as the bills are still being paid by someone, any suggestion of insolvency is wild speculation.
