THE amount of money paid by health boards in compensation for clinical negligence cases almost trebled last year, figures showed today.
NHS boards across Scotland paid out £21,434,576 in 2006-07 – up from £7,707,369 the previous year.

As the Evening News reported in February, NHS Lothian saw the cost of clinical negligence rocket to £7,192,974, up from £58,747 in 2005-06.

The health board claimed the figure – the highest in Scotland in a decade – was bolstered by a minority of large and long-running claims.

The national figures were released by Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon in answer to a parliamentary question by Tory health spokesman Jackson Carlaw.

The Conservative MSP said the public would be "shocked" by the rise.

I think this says more about the education of the doctors and nurses. This is shocking, I know that one of the worst nightmares I have is having to go into hospital.

It also says a heck of a lot about the pressure these doctors and nurses are under, working horrendously long hours, often with poor back up and supervision.

Today's Vote

Should hospital doctors take more care on hygiene to prevent infections?
Yes, they are taking chances with people’s lives.
They should be following the lead set by nurses.
It’s unfair to blame doctors for the spread of superbugs.
