TAKING the contraceptive pill can lead a woman to choose the "wrong" partner, a new study suggests.
The pill is thought to disrupt an instinctive mechanism that brings together people with complementary genes and immune systems.

By passing on a wide-ranging set of immune-system genes, they increase their chances of having a healthy child who is
not vulnerable to infection. Couples with different genes are also less likely to experience fertility problems or miscarriages.

Women are naturally attracted to men with immune-system genes different from their own because of their smell, experts believe.

The major histocompatability complex (MHC) cluster of genes, which helps to build proteins involved in the body's immune response, also influences smell signals called pheromones.

Although pheromones may be almost unnoticeable at a conscious level, they can exert a potent effect.

A man's pheromonal odour is partly determined by his MHC. From a woman's point of view, a man with an alluring smell is also likely to have suitable immune-system genes.

The new research provides evidence that the contraceptive pill can upset this process.

One hundred women were asked to "sniff" six male body-odour samples from 97 volunteers and say which they preferred. The test was carried out before and after the women had started taking the pill. The study leader, Dr Craig Roberts, of the University of Liverpool, said: "The results showed that the preferences of women who began using the contraceptive pill shifted towards men with genetically similar odours."

He said: "Not only could MHC-similarity in couples lead to fertility problems, but it could ultimately lead to the breakdown of relationships when women stop using the contraceptive pill, as odour perception plays a significant role in maintaining attraction to partners."

Charles,
Did you know that the Pill reduces the risk of ovarian cancer as much as 60%. (some studies have shown a reduction of 80%).
The pill does not increase the risk of breast cancer or heart attack.
The Pill is not unsafe, and your stupidity has not been vindicated as you suggest.
By the way, do you know how many people world wide have died of NvCJD (mad cow disease)-probably a few hundred

re #4/5,

Did not get the time to finish comments, DYW dragged me of the laptop.

As for CJD (Mad cow disease), no-one knows how many people were affected and may still be affected, I might have it, you might have it DrP @#2, so that was a stupid statement to make.

I think Charles is right. There is too much invested in THE PILL, economically, socially and politically for us to hear the full unblemished truth about it. It IS a health issue - it pumps women full of chemicals and the stories about cancer, DVT and heart attacks just don't go away.

Today's story is yet another indication that it has been bad for society. If it means women are even more confused about what they are looking for in a partner, it spells disaster on a huge social level, causing untold damge to the family as the paradigmatic unit of our sociey. Then that was the whole point, innit?

Charlie,
The pill does not increase the risk of breast cancer.
It does increase the risk of VTE, but that risk can be minimised by excluding those at higher risk,(family history of VTE, obesity, smoking).
The other clear and indisputable benefits are the relief of severe pain with periods in younger women, the treatment of endometriosis, and the treatment of sometimes torrential bleeding in peri-menopausal women.
Your anti-pill views are based not on facts, but blind uninformed (frankly ignorant) prejudice.
Florestan #11 the pill does not increase the risk of heart attack.

DrP ~13,

The argument could go on forever, you being a Doctor, I think, are obviously prejudice, that the "Pill" can do no wrongs.

Oestrogen's cause cancer, 'Full Stop'!

Maybe one should re-read their text books, or obtain one from this century.

That statement that estrogens cause cancer is not true.
In the data from the Women's Health initiative they found that estrogen by itself did not increase the risk of breast Ca in post menopausal women. Only when combined with progesterone did it do so which had beenknown from previous studies.
I don't read textbooks any more except for a historic perspective. I read Lancet, BMJ, and the Journal of the Canadian Medical Association, every issue of each.
The argument as you say can go on and on but any argument must be backed by the facts. I accept that the Pill is not right for every woman. Some of them just 'don't feel right'. I would automatically look for an alternative in such a person. However you cannot minimise the reduction in ovarian cancer. It is the 6th most common cancer in women but is the 3rd most common cause of cancer deaths following lung and breast in that order. There is no effective means of screening for ovarian Ca and it is most commonly diagnosed in the later, incurable stages.

DrP ~16,

Nice to settle on a relaxed note, 'Thankyou'.

One thing that is disturbing, when you mention,..
"Ovarian Cancer" is that I think there will be confusion, for Girls, being told if they have the 'jab' for 'hpv' they will be free from cancers below,

This is a misconception and once again Women get treated as being ignorant, and pumped full of hormones and drugs, just because they wont question it.

Nice speaking with you, no-doubt we will argue again! :)

Em,

With regard to the cervical cancer jab, the vaccine has been proven ineffective in preventing HPV, contrary to what many beleive to be true it does nothing to eradicate the virus from women who already have it. and the FDA have even revised their previous understanding and stated that they now know that cervical cancer is not directly caused by HPV. In the vast majority of cases HPV goes away by itself without the need for medical intervention.
It is well known by medical professionals that HPV occurs in almost all women who are sexually active, however, vaccinating women who already have HPV has been found to increase the risk of developing high grade precancerous lesions by 44.6%
In other words, if the vaccine is given to a young woman who already carries HPV in a “harmless” state, it may “activate” the infection and directly cause precancerous lesions to appear.

Yet we are currently seeing the HPV vaccination program being implemented in Scotland with the aim to vaccinate girls under 17 years of age, some of whom will already be sexually active yet they are not advised of the hazzardous effects of this vaccination in such cases.

Aside from the issue of the HPV vaccine causing more cases of cervical cancer than it prevents, there have also been thousands of adverse reactions reported including paralysis, seizures and in some cases death has resulted.

Charlie,
Thanks for the last post.
I apologise for being far too arrogant at first especially. Unfortunately it's a trend too common in almost all doctors. You are right to keep questioning on medical matters and frankly it it cannot be emphasised enough how much we are under the influence of major Pharmaceuticals (consciously or otherwise).

I have read about this story in many a newspaper and all say that women on the pill change their preferences compared to those not on oral contraceptives. Then I read the actual study and its results, as published on the Proceedings of the Royal Society B homepage. I found that the scientists did notice a slight shift between pill users and non-pill users, but they clearly express that they do not know if they have found evidence which is significant enough to prove this claim. Or if what they found is making any difference at all in the selection process, only that it might be. So why is nearly everybody saying it is?
