Obese 'adding to food crisis'

OBESE people are contributing to the world food crisis because of the amount they eat, experts claim.
Researchers calculated that obese populations consume 18 per cent more calories than average, boosting the global demand for food and pushing up prices.

Car use by overweight people also had knock-on effects on oil supplies and the cost of food production.

The findings of researchers from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, were published in the Lancet journal.

That's it, the Nanny state needs to take over the control of the food distribution.

You will all be allotted food in the amount of appropriate caloric intake for your age and body size. Chocolate and other treats will only be issued once a month, and only if you've behaved!

obese people may die younger, but I wonder what their proportion of medical expenses is to their life expectancy?

I watched a seriously obese women in a shop buying large quantities of food one day. She told the shopkeeper this was for eating while she watched telly that night. TRUE!

#7 so the nanny state dos not need to look after them when they get heart disease, cancer, type 2 diabetes, eye probs, joint probs etc etc through obesity. The NHS cannot cope so it will be better for the rest of us as they will not clog up the nanny state NHS.

More to the point when are they going to be charged for their excess weight on planes. It seems only fair if you are charged for excess baggage.

Find it difficult to believe it is as little as 18% If someone weighs 50% more than me they need 50% more energy to move at the same rate and that is before taking account of any inefficiency in the conversion process, the weight of the bottle of water glued to the hand and the additional air resistance.

So what follows on from this then? Compulsory dieting? Being fat to be deemed socially unacceptable? De-normalise excessive eating? Prosecution if you are found to have an excessive body fat index??

Don't laugh. They've done it with smoking, they're doing it with drinking so the next natural progression is to do it with eating.

All such matters come down to (the lack of) EDUCATION. For every message about healthy eating, there are 100 more bombarding us the whole time selling us chips, snaks, burgers and pops. And then pills to pop. We (obese or not) are pawns of the capitalist system: somehow we "need" anything and everything remotely marketable.

The Psychology of Eating was never taught to me, but in this dangerous, western world it is essential that more attention be given in Schools, in the Community Health sector and via the media. The cost of not providing this will considerably exceed the cost of doing it.

The problem is that obese people do die earlier than the average BUT they suffer from costly chronic largely self -inflicted ill health for longer - which makes them less productive and less useful members of society whilst eating up more of our limited health care budgets....
ANd #13 I think the "next thing" should be removal of NHS treatment from the densoids who smoke, eat or drink themselves ill then blame everyone else....

I don't know how serious you were but we all pay for the NHS. Do you seriously think it's fair to tax people for a health service (and taxes in Britain have become brutal) and then exclude certain people from using what they've paid for just because you don't approve of certain behaviour? Much sport is more dangerous than over eating or drinking. And smokers already pay far more in tobacco tax than they cost in extra NHS treatment, likewise drinkers with tax on alcohol.

Perhaps a better solution would be to dismantle the NHS altogether and move towards personal health insurance as there is in Germany - then people can pay a fair price for the risk of their own behaviour and even opt out altogether if they earn enough to cover health treatment.

#17 good idea then fatties would have to pay more for their insurance just like smokers do. However, the problem with smokers and extra taxes is we do not have innfinite number of medical staff as no matter how much is thrown at NHS you cannot just conjure staff out of the air. So we all suffer form having to treat those who should live healthier.

#15 it is those who live unhealthy lifestyles who are selfish and the NHS cannot sustain the costs of treating obese , excessive alcohol drinkers and the like.
