A CITY nurse has told how she is lucky to be alive after a pair of pants she bought triggered a severe allergic reaction.
Kim Walker, 37, was given life-saving treatment after her throat closed over due to the onset of anaphylactic shock caused by the knickers. Ms Walker, who works as a nurse at the ERI, was treating a patient when she fell ill.

She bought the slimming pants – made from moisture absorbing fibre – from the Primark store in Greenock for £4. The fibre is said to have caused the reaction.

She reportedly said: "It was very scary. I couldn't breathe. Anaphylactic shock is extremely life threatening and I could have died if I'd been at home. Luckily I was in the A&E department and I was given adrenaline straight away."

The whole, entire "Made in China" thing freaks me out.

As a parent I'm paranoid about any of my childrens' toys coming from China because of the nature of previous problems (loose magnets, lead paint, life threatening problems here - magnets have killed many children now) but unfortunately manufacturers can't see past them because they're so cheap.

What's wrong with people eating healthily and getting more exercise? I don't think these garments make that much difference. If your body is just losing moisture, you can't count that as slimming.

This is a serious incident - I bought a pair of Chinese fabric shoes and within 20 minutes of putting them on had the most frightening allergic experience - the symptoms of which I tracked down to poisoning by one of the pyrethrins which are extensively used in China. Pyrethrin is considered safe because it degrades quickly in light and air - but if it has neither and is new stock recently unpacked from a container which has been fumigated too - it could happen to anyone - and probably does!
