THE North Sea headquarters of a leading oil company have been closed until Monday after more than 100 staff were struck down by a mystery infection.
The Aberdeen offices of Marathon Oil UK were closed on Thursday morning as a precaution after almost a quarter of the employees didn't turn up because they were suffering from sickness and diarrhoea.

Environmental health staff from NHS Grampian were called in to investigate the cause of the outbreak.

It is understood the winter vomiting bug is one of the possible causes of the illness which is being investigated.

A Marathon spokeswoman said

the cause of the outbreak was unknown and NHS Grampian's health protection team was looking at a number of possible causes.

A spokeswoman for NHS Grampian said the company had closed Marathon House to allow "appropriate cleaning" to take place.

She said: "It is still very early in the investigation and information to date indicates that all individuals affected are recovering at home."
