WOMEN who are overweight or have high blood sugar could be more at risk of developing aggressive breast cancer, research shows.
A new study is believed to be the first to look at how excess body fat and blood sugar levels affect the chance of developing different types of tumours.

It found women were less likely to suffer low-risk breast cancer if they were overweight or
suffered high blood sugar (insulin resistance), but were at higher risk of more aggressive tumours.

Experts at Umea University in Sweden carried out the study, funded by the World Cancer Research Fund, and published in the journal Breast Cancer Research and Treatment.

They looked at blood samples and measurements including body mass index (BMI) taken from more than 1,000 women. Of the group, 561 women had been diagnosed with breast cancer while 561 remained free of the disease and acted as a control.

The study found that the association of BMI, leptin (a hormone linked to body fat) and HbA1c (a blood sugar reading) and breast cancer risk differed significantly according to whether the tumour was diagnosed as early stage I or more advanced stages II to IV.

Dr Sarah Cant, policy manager at Breakthrough Breast Cancer, said: "We already know that being obese after the menopause increases the risk of developing breast cancer but this research is the first to suggest being overweight and having high blood sugar levels may affect the stage of breast cancer at diagnosis."

Carbohydrates, of all descriptions, raise BS levels and what does today's Western diet consist of; predominantly carbohydrates. This raises the BS level and keeps it raised causing eventually diabetes or diabetic related ill-health problems. This information has been known for eons of time so well done to those researchers on discovering this! It is more important to keep track of one's BS level than it is to watch blood pressure but I wager no one's GP told them this. When the diet also consists of polyunsaturated fats which are potent immune suppressants and contained in almost all processed foods is there any wonder why ill health is so prevalent? When one considers too that cruciferous vegetables (and other types of vegetables and fruits) are suspected of suppressing the thyroid why then are those dumb nutritionists telling us otherwise? All our food is interfered with from adding poison to the water supply to pasteurisation and homogenisation of milk and the artificial feeding of cattle which is why there is a high incidence of birth defects. It is truly amazing that our bodies can cope the way they do. The only salvation is to return to the traditional diet consisting mainly of protein and healthy saturated fat (which does not furr the arteries) and with carbs ramped down to the occasional luxury food. If you arise in the morning and take cereal with low fat pasteurised and homogenised milk then you are slowly killing yourself and making yourself feel awful. Obviously you are free to reject what I am saying as I am merely an amateur enthusiast of dietetics having read and experimented intensively since 1995 to cure my own ailments. Today, aged 77, I am in the peak of health with no aches nor pains whatsover and still believe that I have a future. I observe, and listen to the ill-health complaints of others who follow the establishment's propaganda and feel sad that they are scared to step 'outside of the box' in the use of their descretion.

Whilst this may be true and we need to know things like this, please can we have it in a little less scary mode. People go into panic mode when these stories appear on a daily basis. Is there anything we can eat. People eat more carb loaded food as its cheap and easy to prepare. We arent all like Jamie Oliver who has the money to buy high quality fresh fruit and veg or the skills to know what to do with mango and asparagus! Most are struggling to pay ever increasing shopping bill. I live with my partner and we have cut our shopping down to once a fortnight only stocking up on bread and milk in between. We both work but find healthy food too expensive and until this is really addressed by the supermarkets and government we will continue to be a society that depends on high carb loaded food.

What doesn't increase the risk of cancer nowadays?

Maybe we should all just give up living.

#6 You overlooked the point highlighted; constantly high BS levels causes 'diabetic related' illnesses and when this is combined with the immunity being surpressed by polyunsaturated fats (vegetable oils mainly) those illnesses include cancer. Cancer occurs (probably) only in those who eat an unhealthy diet and an unhealthy diet is anything other protein and saturated fat. Saturated fat is the body's natural fuel for energy.

Our stomachs are carnivorous, our teeth are omnivorous (for a very special reason connected to survival in the times of famine) but we humans are not herbivorous and were never intended to eat green leaves nor grains.

For example; neither polyunsaturated fats nor saturated fats furr the arteries yet when arterial plaque was analysied it was found to be composed of a massive 70% from polyunsaturated fats, 23% from saturated, and 7% from other sources. The culprit in the furring of the arteries is not the fats as such but the inclusion in the diet of carbohydrates; this is how dangerous carbohydrates are. There is more to this story but this is not the forum on which to elaborate.

Well said Robert, I couldn't have put it better myself. The medical profession are sadly lacking in the knowledge of the connection between the low fat/high carb diet that they recommend we all eat, and the burgeoning waistlines and rampant accompanying diseases that that sort of diet causes. Since I cut all carbs from my diet I have never been in better health.
