BIOLOGICAL washing powders do not irritate the skin or aggravate eczema, say researchers.
Biological powders and liquid detergents contain enzymes that "digest" dirt and stains and operate at low temperatures. For years it has been suggested they can irritate the skin. Now a report in the British Journal of Dermatology concludes there is no evidence for such an effect.

Strangely enough, vile green hairy liquid gives me dermatitis. I would consider that evidence enough.

As #1 says if it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck and waddles like a duck then it's a duck. We would have been better sticking to witch-doctors, at least they gave us a laugh and didn't charge £140k/year for a 40 hour week as "doctors" do and they were more effective too.

I wonder how much money was spent on the science of this when all they had to do was some experiments with people actually using the products. And when they say "'suggested' they can irritate" do they mean that people have had no skin irritation, then they wash the dishes and hey presto they have red blotchy skin?

Enzymes are proteins. It is a fact of basic immunology that some people can be allergic to any protein based substance recognised as "non-self" by the body's immune system and this allergy can be manisfested as dermatitis. I do not believe that nobody's skin is irritated by biological washing detergents. Especially as if I wash my clothes in biological washing powders I often get a rash. It may be that a skin reaction is uncommon, but I doubt it is impossible. While I admit to not having read the study, I strongly suspect the study is flawed.

It rarely just one thing, take cosmetics, often its the combination of color, fragrance and preservative that can really trigger a eczema flare-up. Best to avoid, In Scotland we used to use emulsifying ointment but can't here so we moved to a cream from www.exederm.com which is good too but more expensive
