ANTI-SMOKING campaigners have urged Scotland to follow Ireland’s lead in banning cigarettes from going on display in shops.
ASH Scotland believes such a move would help people to quit or cut down and would ultimately save lives.

Ireland will put cigarettes out of sight in all stores from July 1 next year. ASH Scotland is pushing for a similar licensing scheme to be introduced here, believing it protects young people from unscrupulous retailers and will curb the illegal tobacco trade, which in many cases is linked to organised crime.

Sheila Duffy, chief executive of ASH Scotland, said: “I’d like to congratulate Ireland for once again taking the lead in tobacco control. The motivation behind such strong legislation is the desire to improve the overall health of our people and to do everything possible to make smoking less attractive.”

How Stupid! What do you think hiding cigarette's under the counter will achieve,?
For the older Population it is worse than being treated like Children.

And for the ones that you say, you will deter from smoking, it will only make them more curious and lead them to smoke!

But Don't Worry, the sex magazines will still be on display!

It is all a Nonsense!

James ~2,

Because James, it is a further 'nannying' of being told what we can and cant do, the Dangers we know, it is for us to have choice.

And where and when will it all end,?

Next they will be hiding, the 'chocolate bars'!

Charles is absolutely correct.

This country has been in the grip of mindless nazi morons for far too long.

It is about time we took a stand against them.

Agreed it must be time to take a stand against the facist nannies running the country.

#3 Your right! What they should do is get smokers to sign a contract which says they can smoke as much as they like because they are aware of the dangers and chose to continue and if they become ill they will pay the full cost of the medical treatment.
What's that you say? You are not for that! So we need to pay and suffer for your decision to smoke? No I think you NEED to be told what to do.
Speedy Gonzalas AKA petrol head is another case in point. Any speed because he is the best driver and accidents only happen to other people.

And pray tell what exactly can you do about it other than write on this website?

Where on earth did McDuff get the idea that hiding cigarettes would hurt the black market. If anything it will help them. They have hidden them in most provinces in Canada & 40% of cigarettes smoked are contraband. That gives the antis a warm & fuzzy feeling because they can point out that tobacco sales (legal) are down, so their point that bans work is proven. Meanwhile Canucks are puffing away more than ever.
p.s. I thought McDuff was history.

The Government wants to deter smokers from smoking??

Why don't the government mind their own business and then they won't be minding mine.

I realize politicians just love to control and manipulate our behaviour, butt these nanny governments are getting too rediculous

As far as smokers are a big burden on the health care system, it is the non-smokers who are the biggest burden on the health care system
Every time I buy a pack of smokes I not only pay for my health care but I partially pay for the non-smokers care as well.

Not too long ago, we had advertisements for cigarettes everywhere. During that time, the number of smokers was declining year on year. The smoking ban has made smoking more attractive.

There was a time when heroin and cocaine were sold (legally) over the counter. They banned the sale, and, let's face it, they wiped out the use of the newly illegal substances overnight.

Hide the product, problem solved.

So c'mon, all you naysayers, get with the programme. This is bound to work. (If we ignore history and refuse to learn from earlier prohibition attempts).

Simple, really.

Bill Crombie,

The illegal trade (or black market) in cigarettes has nothing to do with sale of cigarettes over the counter. It has everything to do with the punitive levels of taxation on cigarettes, imposed by Gordie McBean, that makes it attractive to the criminal elements in our society.

Hiding cigarettes under the counter!! Yet another ill-thought-out initiative from TRASH Scotland that will make no difference whatsoever to tobacco uptake. One really must ask "How do TRASH Scotland justify their existance when funded by taxpayer's money"? They are not interested in health, they want to control you, how you spend your money and how you live your life.

Considering McDuff is paid over £50k per annum as Chief Executive of TRASH Scotland, they must really have been scrapping the barrel when she was appointed. Foolish woman.

David of New Mills thinks your a man from the other blog. Is this true with a name like Denise, or should that be without the "e"?

Davina has a problem with his/her sexuality.

David has no problem in deciding his gender, but finds the "DeniseX" soubriquet confusing. As not too many surnames spring to mind with an initial "x", Xerxes, Xavier or Xanadu perhaps, I've always read the name as Deni sex, or even Denis ex. Perhaps Deni(s)(e) would care to clarify for the record?

Poor Davina keeps on about suicide. With the exciting life she leads, it's no wonder she thinks that way.

This sounds a jolly good gung ho wheeze.
If Charles were to recruit stef "Poison Dwarf" of Edinburgh, and have Colonel Gee as co-ordinator, the P.R.A. might be almost as successful as the Publican Party.

Deni seems to be unable to differentiate between suicide and euthanasia. Perhaps the difference between fratricide and sororicide would be too difficult to comprehend also?

Davina. Both are means of killing oneself. Euthanasia is for cowards like yourself, but please stop talking about it and do it. Make everybody happy.

Deni has googled correctly, but both are equally terminal, a bit like smoking, really. Whether you die from lung cancer or emphysema, the end results are similar, and probably equally unpleasant. As for me, I've no intention of topping myself, preferring instead to enjoy many more years of the newly found pleasure of fug free pubs and other enclosed public places. That'll keep me happy, if not everybody on these threads.
