PUBLIC Health Minister Shona Robison today urged people in Edinburgh and the Lothians to join the debate on tackling alcohol misuse.
There are just two weeks left to respond to the Scottish Government's consultation on its plans for minimum pricing, ending irresponsible promotions, raising the off-sales alcohol purchase age to 21 and imposing a social responsibility fee on some retailers.

Ms Robison said: "Our proposals for getting to grips with alcohol misuse have sparked a lively debate across Scottish society.

"This Government has taken the bull by the horns and put forward radical measures to re-balance Scotland's relationship with alcohol, because we don't want to see future generations suffer.

"We believe it's time for action. But we want the Scottish people to understand where we're coming from and tell us what they think. That's why I want to encourage people in Edinburgh and the Lothians to respond to the consultation before it closes on September 9."

She said once the consultation closed, the Government hoped to build consensus across the political spectrum and wider society as it finalised its policies.

Both Robison and MacAskill should be sacked.

They talk utter drivel and given a free reign would think nothing of introducing measures that sweep away freedom of choice, target the innocent and make life unacceptably difficult.

And all this come from a government who are preaching "equality and diversity". How about showing a commitment to that by scrapping the smoking ban and no longer treating smokers as sub-human misfits? How about scrapping ideas that would target innocent people who enjoy a drink?

The pair of them are as bad as each other. Get rid of the Alex.

How about politicians getting to grips with expenses misuse. The politicians job is to ensure the smooth running of the country to allow its citizens or subjects in our case to live with the least amount of interference possible, let me live my own life please, if I want a drink at the weekend I'll damn well have one. Its called freedom of choice

Shona Robison should have been reading the comments on this site since the proposals were announced. I'm sure she'd have noticed that we all notice where these nannying, illiberal measures come from and would have been left in no doubt as to what we think about Ministers who have got way above their station.

Alcohol abuse is a blight on Scottish society and radical action is required. Unfortunately most Scottish voters are, at the very least, mild alcoholics and any action is probably doomed to fail. They should bring these ideas back into the public domain once the Scots have "hit bottom".

Are you looking at my pint?

There were 80 pages in that report and I have to say it got pretty dull after page 32...

The current legislation is not being enforced especially allowing drunk persons more drink. The police no longer have an active arm enforcing the law on drink. They are in breach of their statutory duty. WE should have the same requirement as Australia and not be allowed to serve drink without passing a test on the law and responsible drinking.

Do I detect the whiff of hypocrisy here; we're constantly being told how wonderful our whisky industry is but now we're being told to cut down on its product. I bet MacAskill etc get a few free bottles at Christmas from their big business friends.
