BIRTH defects in Falluja have increased to 15 times the normal rate, in a spike that may be linked to the Iraq War.
Early-life cancers have also risen, possibly in connection with toxic materials left over from battles. Detailed clinical records of all newborns are being compiled after the extraordinary rise was spotted.

Defects include a baby born with two
heads and babies with multiple tumours or nervous system problems.

Neurologists and obstetricians in the city say the rise is unprecedented. Iraqi and British officials have petitioned the United Nations to ask for an independent investigation and for help to clean up toxic materials. It is understood some of that dates back to before president Saddam Hussein was ousted by allied forces in 2003.

Dr Ayman Qais, Falluja general hospital's director and senior specialist, said: "Before 2003, I was seeing sporadic numbers of deformities in babies. Now the frequency of deformities has increased dramatically."

From two admissions a fortnight a year ago, there are now two a day. He added: "Most are in the head and spinal cord, but there are also many deficiencies in lower limbs. There is also a marked increase in the number of cases of less than two years (old] with brain tumours."

During a three-week period, 37 babies with abnormalities were born at Falluja general hospital alone. Dr Bassam Allan, head of the children's ward, urged international experts to examine soil samples in the city.

He called on scientists to launch an investigation into potential causes of the medical problems, saying he believed most of the babies' ailments had been "acquired" by the mother before or during pregnancy.

Falluja was the site of the only two setpiece battles following the US-led invasion, in which the city suffered heavy bombardment.

Health officials are starting to focus on possible reasons such as potential chemical or radiation poisonings.

Abnormal clusters of infant tumours have also been seen in Basra and Najaf, where there have been intense battles. But doctors are reluctant to draw a direct link between the war and defects, saying there might be multiple factors.

Qais said: "These include air pollution, radiation, chemicals, drug use during pregnancy, malnutrition or the psychological status of the mother."

George Bush and Dick Cheney are responsive for this mess. The sooner they are charged with war crimes the better.

It is all pretty obvious, War is not for making life, quite the reverse actually!, and this is not only in the battle fields.

#4 of course the USSR may have played a part in releiving the camps you sight. Regarding overwhelming force, loses at Stalingrad one battle were greater than all the British & Commonwealth loses in WWII. The Battle at Kursk 2.5 million Soviet soldiers, vastly more tham all the Allied soldiers at the D Day landings.
Cambodia, did you miss Margret Thatcher lying to parliament about British soldiers training Kamer Rouge (Pol Pots ) soldiers?
Falluja is the latest, when the explosions stop then the future begins, it is the doctors, nurses and families that have the lifetime of pain and anguish, ask the deliverers and reciprients of "Agent Orange" in Vietnam who still pay the price.
Delpeted Uranium has already been a problem in Kosovo for Italian NATO soldier, has killed a few. clusters of birth defect around Basra have been recorded. Wonder if the effect have filtered to the gene pool of British soldiers who were stationed their Legacy of first Gulf War. Note: the users refuse to give details to the UN Mine clearance teams, nice folks?
Ask the deliverers/reciprients of Agent Orange in Vietnam & The USA. Evidence is not found in the Tabloid press but in the hospitals, care centers, and global historic records.

4 we didnae fight Saddam until he'd ootlived his use to Washington. Human Rights and WMDs (remember them ?) were only a fig leaf.
Just as the "West" didnae take military action tae end apartheid or stop the Rwanda genocide, it didnae suit the "West" (eg whoever calls the shots in Washington) politically

4 The British, Americans and French backed Democratic Kampuchea which was dominated by the Khmer Rouge and as permanent members of the UN Security Council gave DK respectability for years. It was Vietnam that liberated Cambodia from the Khmer Rouge and it was ostracised by the West for its efforts.

2 Dogs in #1:

don't use the word 'maybe' here. no offense to you, but this issue has been studied by doctors from europe, America, Japan, latin america and the arab world. These doctors have gone to Iraq and Afghanistan as well as to southeast europe where battles occurred. All of the ammunition used by the US at least is made of depleted uranium. including the bullets fired from the rifles or the pistols as well as munitions fired from apache helicopters or A-10 planes, they're all made from depleted uranium. When those munitions hit their targets about one third of the munition becomes depleted uranium dust. This DU dust does not work its way into the soil as you'd think because it is lightweight. It stays on the top of the soil and is blown around in the air. For cities like Fallujah where lots of fighting occurred it means that the people are exposed to a poison that causes birth defects, cancer and all sorts of maladies that kill people.

This phenomenon is well documented. it is not just falujah, but many places where the level of birth defects has soared due to the war. the very bad part is that it is expected to continue for thousands of years because the DU dust does not deteriorate or work into the soil.

We said we were going to stop WMD's. and instead we brought a WMD to their homes. People who did not attack us at all.

this is not a maybe or a possibility. this is well documented fact.

US soldiers who are exposed to DU dust also produce birth defect children. There are lots of Americans who have died from the DU dust's effects and quite a number of children born in America with birth defects due to it. The worst of the birth defects though have been in Iraq where the battle zones are.

I've seen the photos of them, I encourage you to look them up as well. They are very horrible.

Wally, old cyber friend, knowing your style these few years, who could take offense? Maybe I should have dropped the Maybe? And, I have seen enough pictures of war and it's aftermath to make me want to crawl under the bed for all eternity. Be well, and how's the fishing by the rivers?
