MORE than £1 million is to be spent on "nutrition champions" to promote better and healthier eating in Scottish hospitals.
NHS boards across the country will appoint their own champions, who will be put in charge of ensuring that all patients receive the best nutritional care while in hospital.

The Food, Fluid and Nutrition programme will involve providing information on standards for nutrient and food provision in hospitals and educating staff on improving nutritional care.

Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon said: "We are launching this programme to highlight the importance of the appropriate food provision for all patients."

Jeannette Morrison, programme manager for Improving Nutritional Care Programmesaid: "The nutrition champions will be key to supporting NHS boards to improve nutritional care for patients."

#1 Charles Linskaill: What are you on about the Food, Fluid and Nutrition programme is no doght mostly to do with old people or serousely ill. Like most pervous nutrional guigelines in hospitals.

Alarminly a lot of long term pacesnts are suffering from under nutrion and NOT over like the outside world. Some older people find it difficult to feed them selfs wither it's to with arm movement, chewing or swalling problems.

Hopefuly this information will include information about how to make meal times easyer and more pleasureble for older and infirm pasents. After all it's NOT just the food that can improve or disimprove health.

As for your low fat food, they possibly wouldn't be served in hosptals, unless dealing with the obese. Genral people who are ill need a wee bit extra protein and fat to aid recover. As foods that naturaly contain fats are good sources of Vit and minerals A & D.

As for your low sugar foods, I don't think they are talking about feeding the pasents healivy processed foods. I think it's more about freshly prepared foods, which will be richer in nuternts.

To summaries if the foods are low in fat and sugar it will because the food are nautraly that way.

All very well but very few patients stay in long enough for the kitchens to know they are there and provide any food at all. First meal after three days is probably a good average.

Eve ~2,

Hi hope you are well.

My post is on a cynical footing as per norm, because I can see This wont end in the, 'Patient Care' only!

We have already been told that the Hospitals were going to ban,..'sugary drinks' from their shops!

Soo what next, no sweets, no cheese rolls, etc ?

Some like 'Pregnant Mums' waiting to go into labour may fancy that,..'Chocolate Bar' and for 'fecks sake' it WILL NOT HARM THEM!

Neither would the can of,..'Irn Bru' which was being talked about for removal from the Hospitals

My Patient as above is for example only, plenty others would not 'Drop Dead' for the want of eating a Chocolate bar!

And once out of 'Auschwitz' I bet you any Patient would be Soo desperate for,..'Normal Food' the first thing they will do when back home is,,,

'St#ff their Face' with their favorite foods that were denied! (making them unable to move, 'Billy Bunters') :)
