SCOTLAND can learn from Ireland as it considers how best to reform firearms law and tackle gun crime, Kenny MacAskill, the justice secretary, said yesterday.
Scottish Government officials have contacted their Irish counterparts to discuss their firearms licensing system, including controls on air weapons. Mr MacAskill will host a summit on Wednesday to help identify more effective ways of tackling firearms misuse. Police, gun control campaigners and shooting representatives are among those expected to attend.

Westminster is responsible for firearms control and Mr MacAskill said he would inform Jacqui Smith, the Home Secretary – who declined to co-host the summit – of the meeting's outcome.

"There is increasing support for an overhaul of the complex and convoluted firearms regime," he said.

Control of air guns? Allow anyone over the age of 10 years to use them. Disallow use in public areas or on private land without permission. Laws against vandalism, assault & poaching/hunting out of season would apply already. Are there not enough laws already? Just apply them with that increasinly un-common item: common sense!

There is enough legislation available to control guns and their use without that waste of space Kenny MacAskill buying into it. Firearms legislation in this country is among the toughest in the world.

MacAskill would be better served bringing in legislation to deal with getting violent offenders off the street. Instead, this waste of space does not want to gaol anyone under the age of 18, even if they are violent neds and thugs.

This waste of space, and well known drinker, also wants to force the supermarkets to raise the price of alcohol. He is under the delusion that this will solve the problem of underage drinkers.

This man really is living on another planet. Wee Eck should get rid of him before he causes any damage.

See MacAskill continuing to thump the tub and follow Laobour policies. If the SNP don't start to show that they are prepared to depart from the Labour agenda soon, the honeymoon could be over. Alex you need to put this man in a sound proof box until you find a replacement.

As for gun control, establish whether or not there is a problem. If there is, establish the cause and if it is cost effective devise a way to deal with it.

Exactly how many members of the anti gun lobby are there Mr MacA? Was it 6 at the last count?

once again kenny starts whining about non devolved matters instead of concentrating on the matters he already has the powers to deal with, such as bringing in an independent body to deal with complaints against the legal profession.

If Westminster is responsible for firearms control, why is Kenny McAskill spending Scottish taxpayers' money on this?

Aye, when the flyin' monks can't make things work, they come up with more laws for us who don't break them in the first place. They have to appear to be doin' something or else the laziness shines through.

Do you think shops should be allowed to sell replica weapons to the public?
Yes, if used properly they are just harmless fun.
Yes, but there’s no demand for them so what’s the point.
No, they could be mistaken for the real thing.
