A ROW has broken out over a planned visit to Scotland by former boxer Mike Tyson.
The one-time world champion, who is a convicted rapist, is due to appear at the Hilton Hotel in Glasgow on Saturday for An Evening with Mike Tyson.

Stewart Maxwell, the communities minister, said yesterday that the event was in "bad taste" and h
as called for Holyrood to be given control of visa issues.

But Barry Hughes, the event's promoter, said Tyson had served a jail sentence for his crime and should not be further punished.

The former boxer's last visit to Scotland, in 2000, for a fight, sparked street protests from some organisations.

Mr Maxwell said: "The SNP and women's groups were highly critical of Mike Tyson being able to stage his fight in Glasgow in 2000, given his conviction for rape, and this latest event is in similarly bad taste."

His view was backed by Lily Greenan, the manager of Scottish Women's Aid, who said: "We strongly disagree with the move for this event to go ahead and for this convicted rapist to be allowed into Scotland."

Mr Hughes said: "Mike Tyson has served his time in prison. How can they expect him to be punished more than once for something he had already been found guilty of?

"I would like people to remember Mike Tyson for the good times in his career."

Why is it that people in this country cannot get a visa to go to America if they have a criminal conviction, but we are allowing in a convicted rapist and thug?

As for the comment that "Mike Tyson has served his time in prison. How can they expect him to be punished more than once for something he had already been found guilty of?", the same could be said for convicted criminals from this country, but they are still not allowed into America.

What is going on? Are the New Labour Sleaze and Corruption Party in such thrall to Bush that they are willing to let such scum into this country?

The sooner Scotland is independent, and we have control over immigration into Scotland, the better.

The US government will refuse entry to any one who has been convicted of a criminal offence. They are especially intolerant of drug offences.

Tyson is a repeat offender who has been convicted of multiple offences including, Rape, Assault, Drug Possession and Impaired Driving.

Does the UK allow all criminals who wish to visit the UK entry, or is that only available to the Celebrity Criminals?

Just watch your women, and your ears. He is a thug and should never be allowed into your country (or ours). Period. It is just our governmental policy to not allow entry into the country for anyone convicted of a crime.Make it your policy also. It is a good idea. Now tell me how to get them out of our country? That is also a good idea. We don't want them.

I agree with #1 Guga. If you have a conviction, you are not allowed into the States. The same should apply here!

He may have "done his time" and deserve a second chance ... but only in his own country.

After all, that's what they're satying to our home-bred crims!

#11 Nikistratos ... the only post removed (#4) was not posted by myself or Guga, who commented on it. To whom then are you referring?

As for convictions stopping you entering the USA, I am not talking about what we call petty crimes, which don't make it on to the US "moral turpitude" list. Tyson's offence was rape ... and that is very serious! I don't think you'd get into the Ststes with that on your rap-sheet. Why should their citizens, convicted of such crimes be allowed here?

A fair question, I reckon ... don't you??

I think Mike Tyson was a great fighter but he is a typical example of 'you can take the boy out of the ghetto but you can't take the ghetto out of the boy!' He is fundamentally a thug. If Mohammed Ali got him in a ring he would receive a great lesson. Okay maybe not now but you know ....

He was accused of rape, probably he was set up, the girl in question was never after a conviction - just money .... his antics in the ring reinforce this belief. He is one to be pitied and his lack of sportsmanship (I hold 4 World ~Records - so what? but I know sportsmanship when I see it and have beaten cheats with naught but determination, blood, sweat and tears) is to be taken into account when one calls him a bum ... it's not about victory it's about how you gain victory.

Mike Tyson will be remembered as a cheat and a undesirable. Let your own judgment decide whether he should be allowed into our country.

everyone has there oppinion but when he became the youngest heavyweight champ in the 80s he was the best fighter in some time but unfortunatley his legendery trainer died and missed his success he worked hard and it paid off unfortnatley he got in with the wrong crowd and they ruined him yeh he did some bad things some maybe truer than others but he has done his time now he should be allowed to live his life i had dinner with him at his tour in manchester and his intelligence and manners are brilliant he is not a bum!
