GEORGE Galloway was rapped by a charity watchdog yesterday for failing properly to vet donations made to his Iraqi charity.
The Charity Commission found donations to the Respect MP's Mariam appeal, totalling tens of thousands of pounds, were funded with money linked to the United Nations oil-for-food scandal.

But Mr Galloway and the other trustees of the appeal failed
in their duty of care to adequately scrutinise the "improper" payments.

It also warned Mr Galloway and the other trustees could be "made to recover funds improperly given" - although the commission itself is not taking any further action.

Its findings are embarrassing for the Respect MP, who has successfully defended himself against accusations he might have profited personally from the oil-for-food programme.

And the commission's report concludes that the money was used for humanitarian causes.

Mr Galloway has denied wrongdoing throughout and last night issued a statement, stressing the appeal was never meant to be a charity.

He said: "The claim that the Mariam Appeal's humanitarian and political campaigning was funded improperly is palpably false.

"The man who is claimed to be the source of 'improper donations' - Fawaz Zureikat - denies any wrongdoing, has never been charged with any wrongdoing, travels freely in the US and continues to do business in Iraq under the puppet government and its Anglo-US masters."

The Mariam Appeal was set up to help a young Iraqi girl who had leukaemia and needed treatment. Mr Galloway used her case to highlight the humanitarian crisis in Iraq during the time sanctions were imposed on the country.

In total, the appeal received nearly £1.5 million. Nearly £252,000 of the donations were traced to deals struck under the oil-for-food programme by Mr Zureikat, a Jordanian businessman and a trustee of the appeal.

In its report, the commission said: "As Mr Zureikat made his donations to the appeal from commissions and other payments derived from the [oil for food] programme, the commission has concluded that these donations came from improper sources."

Under the UN programme, oil companies entered into agreements with the then Iraqi State Oil Marketing Organisation for the allocations of Iraqi oil.

The money under the UN programme was meant to be strictly for humanitarian use by the Iraqi government, headed at the time by Saddam Hussein, when its economy was crippled by sanctions.

But there were suspicions that organisations were given oil-for-food oil contracts, which were then sold on the open market for a profit, allowing the company to cream off commission, in exchange for secret kickbacks to the Iraqi regime.

Galloway ... why is this man still about ? Everyone who has done business with this fellow openly admits he is a backhander king ...

There is just no way this whore of a human being should be allowed anywhere near government/charities/businesses - or anything to do with ... well, anything!

If he was a dog he'd have been put out of his misery by now.

Once you become a thorn in the flesh of the establishment they'll use every trick in the book legal or illegal, to destroy you character wise and even your life; should they decide. I disagree with much of what Galloway believes in, but I wish there were many more politicians as honest and objective
as Galloway is!
What happened to the individual who claimed the earth was a globe when the bible thumpers of his time, were claiming it was FLAT?

Well, well, well, GG is admonished by the charities commission for not paying close attention to all of the donors who contributed to the welfare of sick Iraqi children. Bush and Blair only bomb them.

And surely Bush, Cheyney and their Halliburton friends would be ultra careful about the money they take from Iraqi oil; - and Dear Tony would never accept an improper payment for his party, and neither would he countenance a British arms dealer bribing a Saudi Prince.

Those on the bench in GG's many trials ought to be the ones in the dock !

I have to say that I really don't care for the man. He has somehow, as a lifelong socialist, managed to get himself embroiled with radical Islam. I doubt he especially cares for the fruitloops who advocate killing everyone, but nevertheless, he has allowed himself to share a platform with guys who would appear to hold beliefs that are diametrically opposed to the socialist cause - and it's for him to reconcile his curious choice of bedfellows.
As for the 'finger in the till' accusations, I am sorry, but the whole thing smacks of stitch up. I say again, I think of him as a self important ass, but he still faced down the Senate and delivered an uncomfortable, but true verdict on the whole Iraq adventure. You can call him traitor or quisling or whatever, but to date, he seems the only man prepared to say what he sees in Iraq and I respect him for that. I have just finished reading the Bob Woodward books on Bush and Iraq, and it is truly frightening - Galloway's rant to the Senate was hardly scratching the surface. It truly is the bumbling and deceitful pair of Cheney and Rumsfeld who should be facing a Grand Jury.
It seems to me entirely bizarre that this Galloway sideshow is rolled out every few months, whilst the main event rumbles on, with death, mayhem and destruction still stalking the streets of Iraq, the Taleban rising again in Afghanistan and the Iranians giving the single finger to the rest of the world whilst they ready their new shiny atomic bomb. How the heck did we manage to lose the PR war to democracy hating, suicide bombers and serial beheaders?
Galloway talks an awful lot of drivel at times - but he was never wrong about Iraq, and I think he continues to pay a price for having the temerity to take on the hawks in their own backyard.

9. No.

George Galloway is a crook. He has not one truthful or decent bone in his body ... he was typical of too many trumped up disgusting, fat, lefty councillors with their snouts in the public purse.

Anything with this man's name on it should never see the light of day and how on earth he is allowed to be involved in any way with 'charity' work is beyond me. There are few humans alive who represent the opposite of charity as well as Galloway does!

Without defending everything GG has done or said, i find it typical of 'pravda' Scotsman to put such a negative slant on this. Other reports have concentrated on the good aspects of his fund helping the people it was intended for.

Being slapped on the wrist for accepting some 'dodgy' money - not for a peerage or policy but for a good cause - won't bother GG too much.

18

Calum Crubag,

13 - hey, but a wee while back, everyone here was a Saddam admirer. The Tories, Bush, Rumsfeld etc... didn't hear too many complaints from Labour when we continued to sell him arms, even after the gas attack on the Kurds. But hey, he was a friendly monster back then.

Halitosis #15

"Oliver..lol.. Admirer of Donald Rummsfield... sellor of Arms and poison gas to... Saddam"

I hope you arent claiming I am an admirer of Donald Rumsfeld or that I ever supported the selling of arms or poison gas to Saddam Hussein?

I have never admired Donald Rumsfeld. In fact quite the contrary. On numerous threads about Iraq I have slated him for his overruling his generals and insisting on invading Iraq without the necessary troops to adequately secure the country. I have also consistently condemned the US and the UKs support of Saddam and there subsequent handling of Iraq after the removal of Saddam.

"Ollie I really used to expect a little more from you... but your little better than lynne and Sandy these days"

I dont really care what you expect from me Halitosis. I tell it how I see it. Yes I am opinionated and arrogant. Yes I sometimes put my views too forcefully but at least I care about issues. As for being "little better than lynne and Sandy these days" I will take that as a partial compliment. I respect the passion and stubborness with which they express their views.

Agreed. Unfortunately its a pattern we are repeating ad nauseum. We supported Saddam and look how that turned out. We supported the mujahadeen and they morphed into al-qaeda. That really turned out well.

Now we are close allies with Saudi Arabia against Iran. I make a prediction. Within 20 years that will come back to bite us in the a$$ big time.

Saudi Arabia is spending large amounts of its oil money on spreading wahhabi radicalism throughout the west. Where did most of the 9/11 terrorists come from? Answer: Saudi Arabia. Where did most of the radical clerics spreading hatred in UK mosques train? Answer: Saudi Arabia.

Despite all their power, influence and control of the media, the Neocons and Zionists couldn't pin any bullhist charge on George Galloway.
Why? Because he never did anything wrong, that's been proven after several court cases, but still they try to discredit him because he's a thorn in their sides.
He opposed the invasion of Iraq, he opposed western sanctions that starved Iraqis, and he opposes Israel, that's the real reason why he's painted as an undesirable by the UK and US governments, and some of the media.
Look him up on youtube, especially the 40 something minutes recorded when he faced the senate, and decide for yourself who to trust!

#13> You are totally wrong in your accusation about Galloway being an admirer of Hussein. He was a persistent attacker of him and many of his Tory supporters and friends within the House of Commons.
I don't have a great deal of time politically for the man, but many off the accusations levelled against him in this post only reveal the true ignorance off some of the participants. No wonder we have our young servicemen and women being sacrificed in the most unjust wars in recorded history.
All Galloway's records on his opposition are freely available in Hansard, within the Commons.
The antagonists on this forum don't help the validity
of genuine opposition.

You must not have seen the tv footage of George Galloway "brown-nosing" saddam hussein when he met him in Iraq. Quote from when he met Saddam:

"Sir, I salute your courage, your strength, your indefatigability ..."

George Galloway is a disgrace.

GG is totally innocent of receiving dodgy funding in relation to the UN oil-for-food scandal, and we all know it.

But he is guilty of the following:

i) opposing the warmongers' desire for war and barbarism in Iraq.

ii) for opposing the genocidal sanctions against Iraq prior to the illegal invasion, which resulted in the deaths of over 1 million innocent Iraqis.

iii) supporting the plight of the displaced Palestinian people.

iv) for opposing Israeli barbarism against Palestinians and the continuous theft of Palestinian lands.

v) for being brave enough to stand up to the Senate in the so-called Land of the Free.

vi) for telling the truth about the US/UK/Israeli war machine and its desire for domination in the middle-east regardless of consequences.

It is just another pathetic attempt to smear a courageous individual who will not toe the line. Shame on the Charity Commission for letting their organization be used like this.

#32. john ress, Voldemort & Oliver also above.

Right on all counts. Galloway is a repellent, self-serving fop. He trumpets for extremist Islam as a practising Catholic. How does that sit, I wonder, with his latest constituency? They are obviously thick enough to be taken in by his ranting, raving, Old Labour rhetoric.

He is, at best, a jumped-up Dundee councillor who has never had a real job, and has done bugger-all for anyone except to enhance his own millionaire status with a string of litigations. He is a showman, a limelight-hugger, a practised political manoeuvrer of the slimiest kind.

To all of you, responding to the one-track dross trotted out by Dogbreath is a total waste of energy.
