VASSILY Ivanchuk is that rare breed of elite player to play in events in which the non-elite participate. One classic example being in 2005, when the Ukrainian ace mingled with the masses in the Canadian Open at Edmonton.
Many watching him for the first time were bemused by the fact that, savant-like, he has a habit of staring at the ceiling or off into the distance when other would be looking at the position on the board.
