THIS board from the National Pairs final was a top for the winners, but it could easily have been a bottom. East opened 1H in third seat, and Les Steel overcalled 1S.
West bid 1NT, even though her spade stopper was not too robust, and Dave Walker made a pre-emptive jump to 3S – again not ideal, with the scattered slow values. When 3S came round to West she doubled, hoping for 200 or more.
