Mòr: big/great
Pronounced more, and also sometimes spelt mór in older books. It comes up in many place names, such as An Gleann Mòr, the Great Glen. It also appears in some personal names and nicknames. Great clan chiefs of the past might be referred to as Iain Mòr, John the Great, because of their deeds. Gaelic grammar dictates that the word should sometimes be spelt Mhòr, pronounced "vore". The reason is that when the adjective follows a feminine noun it changes from mòr to mhòr and the pronunciation changes to a "v" sound. Harris Tweed is called in Gaelic Clò Mòr, or Great Fabric, pronounced "claw more". Clò is masculine, so it is clò mòr and not clò mhòr.

It's nice to note that Nova Scotia has reinstituted both accent marks, since they do affect proper pronunciation. So, in Nova Scotia, "mór" can again be spelled properly.
