MOTORISTS have been warned to steer clear of the Forth Road Bridge this weekend, with roadworks to install a bus lane expected to cause major delays.
The bus lane is seen as vital to improving the safety of bus services across the bridge, and plans were drawn up after frequent complaints from bus drivers, passengers and motorists.
The problems stem from a bus stop on the north side of the brid
ge, which is little more than a small layby, where buses try to pull into fast traffic from a standing start.
The work will create a new bus lane running for about 300 metres along the A90, which will allow buses to merge more easily with other traffic.
The works were meant to take place last month but were cancelled because of high winds.
FETA convener Tony Martin said: "This improvement is part of our scheme to upgrade the road layout at the bridge following the abolition of tolls. It's been made possible with £100,000 funding from Sestran, the regional transport partnership.
"Bus drivers and members of the public have often told us that it can be difficult and dangerous for buses to pull out of the existing bus stop into the accelerating traffic at the north end of the bridge.
"This new bus lane will make it much easier and safer for buses to stop then rejoin the motorway."
