SIENNA Miller was yesterday nominated for the only Bafta award voted for by members of the public.
The 26-year-old actress is one of five names shortlisted for the rising star award – now in its third year – with the winner to be announced at next month’s Bafta ceremony.
Miller was propelled to fame thanks to a relationship with her fellow a
ctor Jude Law and has been praised more for her fashion sense than her work as an actress.
But she received warm reviews for her role as Andy Warhol’s muse Edie Sedgwick in Factory Girl, co-starred in Interview with the director Steve Buscemi and is about to appear in The Mysteries of Pittsburgh and Hippie Hippie Shake.
Other contenders for the Bafta include Sam Riley, 28, who won rave reviews for his performance as Ian Curtis in Control, the biopic of the Joy Division frontman. Shia LaBeouf, 21, an American actor has also been nominated.
He will appear in the fourth Indiana Jones instalment alongside Harrison Ford and was recently seen in the action adventure Transformers.
The final two names in the frame are Tang Wei, 28, a Chinese actress and former model who makes her feature-film debut in Ang Lee’s new erotic thriller, Lust, Caution, and Ellen Page, 20, a Canadian actress who played the lead in Hard Candy and is receiving good reviews for her role as a pregnant teenager in the forthcoming film Juno.
Eva Green, who starred in the James Bond film Casino Royale, took the title last year.
She was on the jury that chose the shortlist for the 2008 award alongside other industry figures.
The panel was chaired by Duncan Kenworthy, the producer of films such as Love Actually.
Green said: “This year’s five nominees are all actors who have really stood out in their work and I’m sure we’ll see a lot more of them throughout 2008.”
