SIR Sean Connery aims to keep his promise of appearing at the opening night of the Edinburgh Film Festival despite chipping a bone in his shoulder.
His spokeswoman Nancy Seltzer said last night that he tripped while playing a round of golf in New York State.

He is not in hospital, but his arm is in a sling.

Sir Sean himself was not available for comment. "He's driving back to New York Ci
ty and is feeling fine," said Seltzer.

Sir Sean is patron of the film festival, along with Tilda Swinton. He is due to fly to Scotland tomorrow and appear on Wednesday evening at the premiere of the opening film The Edge of Love, a drama about Dylan Thomas's love life, starring Keira Knightley.

The opening night premiere takes place at Cineworld at Fountain Park, just a few hundred yards from the tenement where Sir Sean grew up.

Last night, Ms Seltzer insisted: "For now, his plans remain the same."

She added that the injury was "not complicated" and he should be able to make the transatlantic crossing. His arm is in a sling but not in plaster. Sir Sean has had several health scares in recent years. He has had cataracts removed from his eye and a benign tumour from his kidney. He also has regular checks on this throat, following the discovery of growths some years ago.

Later this summer, he is due at the Edinburgh Book Festival for the launch of his book Being a Scot. He is 78 on 25 August, the day of his planned reading.

Sean Connerys greatest role was in "The Hill"-one of the best films to come out of the sixties with a cast that included another great Scot-Ian Bannen along with Harry Andrews,Ossie Davis and Michael Redgrave. A film that all should see at least once in their lifetime.

".....I'll be there for shure, promises Sir Sean...."

Does The Scotsman have any proof readers (or even MS Word with spell checker turned on)? What an example to set!

I'll be there for SURE, promises Sir Sean !

Oh I am so honoured that the Self Proclaimed King of Scotland is to give us the benefit of his presence. Not.

Count your days in the UK carefully King Sean, you might get clobbered for some non-dom tax and a good wholesome Scot like you could never have that could you?

#1 I agree it's one of his best, but his greatest performance has to be in The Offence, also with Ian Bannen and the same director Sidney Lumet, with whom he worked on many films and I think did his best work with.

#7 Is that the one where he appeared in knee high leather boots and a red leotard? We've all seen him acting as England's King Arthur along with Richard Gere; what a farce of an actor he is: should be restricted to burger commercials.

I thought King Arthur was Welsh?

I thought King Arthur was fictional.

Mikko:
You are so very hateful towards this man. Do you need to be reported to the authorities? does your anger/hate extend into wanting to act against him? Give it a rest. There is nothing wrong with people liking other people especially a public figure; because you don't like someone, does not mean beans. It would be impossible to go through this life expecting to like EVERYONE you meet along your way.
I think by now all of us regular readers know you don't like the man.

I think if Mikko actually met Sean, I don't think he would be quite so hostile to his face.
As Sean is still a big Edinburgh hard man.
And Mikko isn't.
