BLACK AFFAIR

Pleasure Pressure Point

****

V2 VVR1050491, £9.99
In which Beta Band founder Steve Mason, aided by Warp recording artist Jimmy Edgar, celebrates the musical influences of his youth: the slinkiest examples of Eighties electronica.

It is more skintight leather-clad DAF than louche eye-linered Soft Cell, all shimmery synth lines underpinned by throbbing bass lines – 'It's Real' – or the strangely polite kinkiness of 'It Goes Like This'.

This is sparingly bitter and pleasingly positive, agreeably different and really rather good.
