Pupils turn teachers for HIV lessons

PUPILS at a city high school will be turning teacher to educate their peers about HIV.

A group of S6 pupils at Boroughmuir High have been learning about HIV and Aids for four weeks to teach their school mates.

They will be presenting what they have learned at two special assemblies tomorrow as part of a British Red Cross project marking World Aids Day.

Tom Gillam, Red Cross youth and schools manager, said: "This peer education project is important for personal health reasons and also so we can raise awareness about the global issues.

"The Red Cross realises that peer education is an effective way to reach young people. They find it easier to listen to their peers on sensitive topics like HIV."

The ten pupils involved have been learning about how HIV is transmitted.
