PUPILS at a city school will plant apple trees to mark the launch of the Commonwealth Orchard.
The children at Ferryhill Primary are taking part in a Scotland-wide initiative to plant fruit trees close to where they live so they will be bearing fruit by the time of the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
The Commonwealth Orchard is a project of the award-winning Children's Orchard and has gained support from a wide variety of groups, including Soil Association Scotland, The Forestry Commission, Scottish Allotment Gardeners, as well as small community groups and individuals.
John Hancox, director of the Commonwealth Orchard, said: "It's great to be starting with children at its heart, and it's really important to its success that it has the community at its roots.
"The Commonwealth Orchard is something that can leave a positive legacy of the Games to communities across Scotland.
"It is something that can strengthen our communities."
