A FORMER presiding officer of the Scottish Parliament has backed St Andrews University's decision to de-recognise a controversial men-only society.
George Reid, who is a former member of the Kate Kennedy Club, whose origins dates back to the 15th century, supported new principal, Dr Louise Richardson, who earlier this week stated that supporting the society was completely at odds with the unive
rsity's inclusive ethos.

Mr Reid joined the club, perceived as an exclusive preserve for rich, white upper-class English males, 52 years ago and said it was an accepted part of St Andrews life at that time.

But he added: "Half a century on it is a different world. In 2002, I met with club officials and Brian Lang (the former principal] and made it very clear that modern Scotland was an inclusive society where institutions must be open to all.

"I still have the position of (encouraging] inclusion and equal rights, and I endorse the position of the principal and the student association."

Mr Reid also holds honorary degree of Doctor of Laws from the university.

The university's student association backed Dr Richardson, describing the club's membership policy as an "anachronism".

The KK, as the club is informally known, is famous for a colourful annual procession. It is led by a male student dressed as a woman. The club was set up to honour the niece of Bishop Kennedy, one of the founders of the university.

On Wednesday, Dr Richardson e-mailed every student to say that the university was withdrawing official recognition of the club.

She said she hoped the procession would continue as an "important tradition" and praised the group's charitable fundraising. But she added: "The university will not be participating officially in the procession this year nor continuing its recognition of the Kate Kennedy Club."

She added: "The official endorsement of any club or society which excludes people because of their gender or race would be completely at odds with the values of this university, and our commitment to foster an open and inclusive international community."

In 2002, a petition against the club sparked a university snub of the procession.

While he was a student at St Andrews, Prince William is reported to have not sought membership of the society in disapproval of its policy.

However, Murdo Findlay, the current KK president, said the society would not bow to external pressure to admit women.

The move comes after Dr Richardson was denied membership of the men-only Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews – a courtesy extended to her male predecessors.

"FORMER presiding officer of the Scottish Parliament has backed St Andrews University's decision to de-recognise a controversial men-only society."

There is a female equivalent society at the same university. Will George Reid do us a favour and voice his support of 'de-recognising' this or is this yet another anti-male diatribe that we are all getting sick snd tired of?

You'd have thought that if the Hootsmon wants to feature this story a second day running it would at least try to be a bit more balanced and tell us about the female only society as well. Equal rights my ar*e.

Meanwhile it is official Lie-bour policy to put forward female-only shortlists for a number of parliamentary seats, along with replacing men who are retiring with only women.

This is surely a bigger and more worrying sexist crime than having single-sex organisations?

#4 "" Mr Reid joined the club, perceived as an exclusive preserve for rich, white upper-class English males"
Ith just mirrors the entire University itself actually!"

#4 I am appalled.

I am a woman graduate of St Andrews, the first of my family to achieve a University Degree level education. My family are originally from Fife, and therefore this was our local University.

To have you denigrate and disparage it in this fashion is nothing short of a gratuitous insult to the large numbers of students and Graduates who have fought to obtain a place and who have worked hard to gain a degree from Scotland's oldest University.

I suggest you tender a public apology to those whom you have insulted.

#7. Well said. I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for this apology if I was you.People who hold these extreme (usually anti-male views) rarely see the error of their ways.

As you say, people forget that Universities all over the country have a wide range of students from a whole range of different backgrounds. However, to some, this is irrelevant in their quest to kick the white male.

Fi, don't worry about that poor rascal Tam, he couldn't get in anyway. I'm glad there leaving the R&A out of it. Golf is more important than the he-man woman haters club.

#8 and #9, many thanks.

My comment wasn't directed with a result in mind. Rather, from simple truth, I wished to provoke sensible commentary.

I have succeded.

Kind regards,

St. Andrews Univ is an anglicised playground for toff offspring, and a useful career move for mostly English academics, who have now filled the place. Its about as Scottish as morris dancing and cricket.

Well said TV. I, like many men am also thoroughly sick of the continuous flow of anti male rhetoric that has so damaged our society over the past 2 decades and more.

And what about female only swimming sessions? What's that nonsense all about? They can come to any swimming session including their own personal reserve, males are limited in their choice.

I'm not against single sex activities but they have to be reciprocal.

And talking about benefits of the union with England (which we weren't), Scottish Universities have been a major benefit for England who have huge numbers of their students in Scotland. St Andrews consistently having more English than Scottish students.(Ludicrous!!)

Ironic that Scotland's first SNP First Minister should come from this 'English' University.

#11 Do please look at the facts before posting.

I'm one of the majority of working class graduates of the University of St Andrews in recent years.

Most of the people I met were in a similar financial position and came from a similar background. Yes, there were, "toffs," to quote your comment, but they were no less intelligent and ultimately deserving of their place than anyone else.

If you disrespect my alma mater, I will cut you down. Clear?

12...There are female only swimming and gym sessions because women need them...if you cannot see that then you really do need to raise your awareness...not every woman is comfortable in swimming gear and minimal clothing around men...many women have been sexually assaulted, raped or abused by men...they need a female only environment in order not to feel threatened or objectified by men...some women need it for religious or cultural reasons...Personally I was fed up with men hogging the equipment in my local gym and grateful for the womens only evening where I was able to participate without waiting around for hours...

You just want to whinge and complain..if you think you need it then please go ahead and ask for it...no one is stopping you..

From the University's own website:
"The majority of our students are from the UK but almost 25% come from international backgrounds and altogether represent over 70 countries."

Also, I referred to cutting down unsubstantiated, unpleasant and thoroughly disgraceful remarks.

My debating skills are obviously superior, perhaps now is a good time to admit defeat?

#16 - spot on

I understand your comments, and support them. If men wish for, "men only," sessions in their local pool or gym, they need only request them. Perhaps they don't for a latent fear being labelled gay?

This fear has never stopped women from requesting these local authority services, is it therefore a male issue?

Perhaps #12 Brian Hill might like to comment?

I'd welcome the choice or male, female, or mixed swimming sessions at my local pool in Leith. Perhaps Mr Hill might like to instigate a petition?

Should a concerned citizen visit the local MP's surgery? They are on the corner of Leith Walk and McDonald Road...

BTW this so called newpaper really is a joke, isn't it??? How hard would it have been for the author of this article to find a dozen former members of this society who could speak to the harmless nature and benevolence of this all male club???????????

23..Ah yes I see your reasoning completely...yawn...do you have a problem with the fact that there are predatory men who hurt women and that there are women who have the right to be protected by our society?...do you have a problem with the fact that there are women who prefer/need the modesty of female only space whilst exercising/swimming?....if so then..

YOU have a problem sunshine...please seek counselling immediately..
