TRAM chiefs have unveiled the latest member of the team helping to safely deliver the £545 million project – and he's only ten.
Jack Ferries, a pupil at Fox Covert School in Clermiston, beat off competition from youngsters across the city to provide the winning design for new safety posters, which will go up along parts of the route.

With so much of the city currently bein
g dug up for the 11-mile tram line, contractors want to make sure children know the dangers associated with playing close to work sites.

Jack's winning entry features one of the all too familiar metal railings which currently line Princes Street, and asks: "What's behind this fence?"

The poster then warns fellow youngsters about the dangers associated with large work holes and heavy machinery

Richard Jeffrey, chief executive of tram firm TIE, said: "Jack's poster really captured the message that tram work sites must be treated with respect or could be dangerous.

"Children are fascinated and excited by the work, the tools we use and the large bits of kit on site.

"Our schools programme has been successful in explaining to youngsters about the trams but also alerting to them the dangers of work sites.

"I'm delighted with the quality of the posters and all of the hard work the children put in to them. They'll play a vital role as part of our work site communications."

Tram staff have been working with primary schools along the route to give pupils more information about the project.

Earlier this year 21 schools were visited to teach children the importance of staying safe around work sites.

Jack's poster, along with 10 other entries, will be used next to the tram work sites on Princes Street and at Haymarket.

Jack said: "It's great to see my poster up on the fences around the tram works.

"TIE came into my school and we learned all about the trams and how to make sure we don't play on the work sites. I'm looking forward to using the trams when they arrive."

Meanwhile, the council's new transport convener, Councillor Gordon Mackenzie, will today visit the replica tram when it goes on show at Ocean Terminal.

The mock-up has already been visited by around 80,000 people during its time in Princes Street and Constitution Street.

Cllr Mackenzie said: "I'm delighted that the tram mock up is proving so popular along the route. Leith will be a buzz of activity during the Leith Festival.

"I am sure that many thousands of people will take the opportunity to find out how these environmentally friendly trams will help move about our growing population quickly and efficiently to and from Leith and around Edinburgh."

Cllr Mackenzie is cleary a sad, deluded man who really should get out more if he thinks the mock-up tram is a welcome addition to the Leith Festival.

Young Jack would probably do a better job of promoting or micromanaging the Trams shambles. How about it TIE?

"I am sure that many thousands of people will take the opportunity to find out how these environmentally friendly trams will help move about our growing population quickly and efficiently to and from Leith and around Edinburgh."
Wrong !

NOT environmentally friendly, using power generated by COAL powered power station, NOT Green.

NOT moving people around Edinburgh, only a single line on a very narrow corridor, will only serve approx 5% of Edinburgh population.

Why do they persist in repeating these lies ? Do they think that repitition will change the reality of the situation, ? just makes them look silly

"NOT environmentally friendly, using power generated by COAL powered power station, NOT Green."

emmm, or nuclear? From the nuclear power station just down the road? That's extremely green. Oh and I gather carbon capture is soon to be introduced.

Dear Foo, let's not forget about Longannet & Cockenzie, this is not Green energy, and as for nuclear, this is wizadry practised by the spawn of satan, wheeesht wheesht oh wheeshtywheesh - protect me from ghostly green glow, I think that the Trams would best be pulled by teams of volunteer cyclists

This is sick ... TIE have resorted to brainwashing the kids.

I would love to know exactly who's idea it was to involve kids in the tram works - this is really diabolical business practice and deeply worrying that this sort of thing is allowed. The propaganda machine has entered the schools! This is TOTALLY unacceptable and the most despicable political dirty tricks I have every heard of!

Yet more tram propaganda.

This time TIE have stooped as low as it goes by using a ten year old boy's efforts with a safety poster to try and further hoodwink Edinburgh citizens into thinking the tram project is worthwhile and value for money.

With statements like 'these environmentally friendly trams will help move about our growing population quickly and efficiently', Cllr Mackenzie is demonstrating that he too is a complete liar and an idiot.

The amount of energy used not only during the construction phase of the tram LINE but also used in the manufacture of the trams, rails etc, etc is absolutely enormous - couple this with the astronomical amounts of electricity they will require if they ever get up and running, and you are certainly not looking at an 'environmentally friendly' transport project - far from it in fact.

Foo.

Should the tram project ever get anywhere near an operational stage, the majority of the electricity for the trams WOULD come from Cockenzie or Longannet power stations.

With reference to the so called 'carbon capture' technology, this technology is in it's absolute infancy and actually may never become a feasible or sensible way of trying to control emissions from coal-fired power stations.

In fact it is so unworkable and so under-developed that the media attention it seems to be getting is nothing more than unsubstantiated greenwashed claptrap.

Anything to keep someone in a job eh?

LIES!!!! Even there own study demonstrated that they would have an overall negative impact on the environment. Brainwashing the young, sounds like something the Nazi's would have done.

Tie numpties stoop to a new level here. Trying to brainwash kids that trams are great.
They aren't and no amount of lies from councillors regarding the trams green credentials and city wide accessability will make those lies become truth.

Well done, wee yin! By the looks of things TIE will take the rest of the Millenium trying to finish the trams - so it may well become an Edinburgh Institution and Tourist Attraction! Very well done, I say again!

oh dear !!more propaganda!!!the people who thought up the crazy tram system must have been very juvenile indeed, the whole tram business is a diabolical waste of money, that is crystal clear
a better idea would have been to build bigger and better lunatic asylums for by the looks of things we will all be needing them soon.

If course its only Propoganda. We don't really let 10 year old children design Health & Safety posters for the public transport industry do we? Strange that they use paid professionals & paid consultants for every part of this project yet when it comes to the design and communication of important safety information they let the kids in. Mind you it looks like a 10 year old designed the route.
