South Sub debate heats up as Labour calls for commitment

THE city's ruling Lib Dem-SNP administration was under fire today after failing to "reaffirm its commitment" to reopening the South Sub railway.
During a heated debate in the Lothian Chambers yesterday, Labour councillors urged the coalition partners to "show leadership".

The group's transport spokesman, Councillor Ricky Henderson, presented a motion in support of bringing back passenger trains to the railway line.

But the administration passed a separate amendment, which instead referred the issue to next week's transport committee.

Earlier this week, council leader Jenny Dawe said she was still committed to the South Sub, despite recommendations from council officials to rule out the project.

A recent report by consultants concluded that a passenger route from Newcraighall through the south of the city to Edinburgh Park was the best option for the scheme – but would require a large public subsidy.

Labour group leader Ewan Aitken said: "People need to hear that this is the right thing for the city. This is about how you show leadership, and that all manifesto promises are being kept."

Cheap sniping, unfortunately. The South Sub doesn't stack up. And I suspect it isn't in the list of projects to be prioritised over the period to 2022. It doesn't really matter much what CEC says.

So Ewan Aitken's idea of showing leadership is to create a large hole into which the council will pour our money every year. Trams anyone?

1) You're quite correct the South Sub "Doesn't stack up" BUT GOES AROUND (and should serve) THE SOUTH SUBURBAN AREA OF EDINBURGH - out and back, BOTH WAYS from/to Waverley, just like the Cathcart Circle does - out and back, BOTH WAYS from/to Glasgow Central!!!

" a large hole into which the council will pour our money every year"

A re-opened South Sub would NOT be run by the Council and therefore 'subsidy' would not come from Edinburgh council tax payers.

It would be an extension of the ScotRail franchise. I believe SR WANTS to run passenger trains along the SS - but not as an Edinburgh Park/Newcraighall shuttle.

This project has been sidelined for years because SO/SE/SG civil servants and council officials are much more interested in roads than rail.

No-one ever describes new roads as a subsidy for motorists!

Today's Vote

Would the council be right to consider raising bus fares to finance a tram extension?
Yes, it’s worth stumping up for this step forward
No, many bus passengers will never use the tram
Only if trams have space for wheelchairs and prams
