FOR local businesses seeking to earn a living amid the disruption of the tram works, a sense of humour has become a must.
But when one trader come up with a cheeky new advertising campaign to promote his pub, it appeared there were some who did not see the funny side.

Graham Blaikie, owner of the Mercat Bar in Haymarket, put up posters advertising the pub under the s
logan "Need to Fill a Hole?" beside a trench.

The adverts, which were designed to promote the pub's food, also aimed to poke fun at the tram works, which have been going on in the area for much of the last year.

However, tram bosses told the pub to remove the posters, apparently after receiving complaints from the public that they were "inappropriate". The posters were ripped down within a week, though tram bosses insist it was the work of vandals, not them.

Mr Blaikie, 33, said: "I was quite upbeat about the trams at first and accepted that the work had to be done, but it's now costing me money.

"I'm totally bamboozled as to how it can take so long to do the work. I don't want to offend anyone, but I need to do something. They obviously just don't have a sense of humour."

Tram firm TIE said the pub had been given permission, along with other local business, to erect advertising on barriers.

But a spokesman said the Mercat was told to remove the posters after complaints were received from members of the public.

Steven Bell, project director, Edinburgh Tram Project, added: "We recognise that during the tram works we must work with local traders to assist them in spreading the message that their business, and indeed Edinburgh, remains open for business.

"A major part of this activity is encouraging respect in Edinburgh and its aspirations. We asked the proprietor of the Mercat Bar to remove these signs due to negative comments from the public on their content. We'll continue to work with local traders to ensure the message that Edinburgh is open for business is promoted loudly and clearly."

Complaints from members of the tram project team more likely......I cannot believe any sane member of the public would feel the need to complain over this.

Censorship.

Precisely. Complaints from the public? What a load of tosh. Any sane member of the public would just have had a chuckle and moved on, and it's too far away from Tynie for it to be Gorgie Tony.

Some nice free advertising for the Mercat at least, and another example of Stasi style PR management from those funsters at TIE.

So what right do tie have to TELL someone to take down posters? Sounds as though these former local authority staff have forgotten that they are the SERVANTS of the public. Typical Trots!

It seems they need to be put in their place - and "the work of vandals" - sounds more like criminal damage to me - have the police been notified? Not that there is much chance of them getting off their seats in the local station these days.

Well, not a big fan of TIE but, since the posters were hanging on railings owned and erected by TIE, it seems that they would have the right to ask for them to be removed. Which doesn't alter the censorship argument in itself, of course.

"tram bosses told the pub to remove the posters" and "the Mercat was told to remove the posters" - on exactly whose authority?

The posters are not offensive; they are a joke. Something that maybe some people just don't get.

Put the posters back.

#15 Curious Yellow "tram bosses told the pub to remove the posters" and "the Mercat was told to remove the posters" - on exactly whose authority?

The barriers are either owned or leased by TIE or TIE's contractors. That gives them rather a lot of authority over what posters may or mey not be placed on them.

Maybe the Mercat should put a sign up in their window saying something like:-

"Show those tram workers how it's done...come in, check out our menu and fill a hole"

I'm sure Copymaid opposite would be only too happy to furnish them with a couple of posters.

Curious Yellow,

Graham P - "Tram firm TIE said the pub had been given permission, along with other local business, to erect advertising on barriers" - the fact that tbey didn't like it amounts to cencorship, and what exactly could TIE do if the pub refused to remove them, or put them back again? Zilch.
31

Thomas the Tank,

Edinburgh 27/05/2009 12:55:04
. . . and on the subject of misleading advertising, when are TIE going to get round to altering the banal slogans on their advertising signs - 'Taking youze tae the shoaps/ocean terminal/somewhere near the airport in 2011' is, as their new Ch Exc now concedes, dishonest. Reference to the ASA, anyone? And the cooncil can demonstrate that TIE went through a process of planning permission to erect them, can they?

CAR ONLY EDINBURGH,

car 28/05/2009 17:19:47
There's only one solution to Edinburgh transport problem:

Kill the trams, Close all the Railway stations in Ediburgh, Shut down the buses, Ban all bicycles and make edinburgh a car only city.

For too long have Edinburgh's Drivers suffered! Anyone who doesn't own a car or drive in my opinion is tratior scum who should leave Edinburgh and never come back!

EDINBURGH IS A CAR ONLY CITY! KEEP IT THAT WAY!
