THE prospect of years of tram roadworks does not appear to be putting people off coming to Edinburgh, says a new poll.
A total of 78 per cent of those surveyed who travel around the Capital at least once a month for non-business reasons say they would not be put off doing this journey as a result of the works.

Mori's poll on the £498 million project commissioned by the Open for Business steering group sampled 1505 people living within a one-hour drive of the city centre.

Another question in the survey saw trams come out on top of a list of things people would like to see done to improve transport links around Edinburgh.

Willie Gallagher, executive chairman of TIE, said: "A commitment to keep Edinburgh open for business throughout construction works has been at the core of all of our planning.

"The survey shows that this work is bearing fruit. However, we are aware our commitment must remain firm as the tram scheme comes to life on the streets of Edinburgh."

I think the headline is putting a bit of a positive spin on this survey results. It could intead say that nearly a quarter of people who visit the city (22%)will be put off - that can't be good for business..?

If this is the case why do we have to subsidise the £100,000 plus 'roadshow'? See another item i9n today's News

Has anyone actually thought about how heavy trams rumbling through the streets of Edinburgh (with all the low frequency vibration) will hasted the bits crumbling off the buildings on the tram route? The fireworks being set of from the castle have been blamed in the past but they do not cause problems day in day out as the trams will do. I'm sure this will do much to put off people from visiting Edinburgh if they have an increased prospect of a lump of maisonary falling on them!

Was the poll conducted for Mori by edinburgh district council?

By the way if there are any enterprising posters out there who know the names of the MSP's & Edinburgh District councillors who penned their names to authorise this democratic descision please pen and post them here.

By the way posters I wonder who's palm Alfred McAlpine greased to win the contract. Mind you that would never happen ...conflict of intrests... naw, no way

This is nothing but complete spin and a last-ditch attempt to hoodwink people into thinking that Edinburgh actually needs trams.

EDINBURGH DOES NOT WANT OR NEED TRAMS.

My Practice Manager wants trams as she will no longer be obliged to drive me between my city practice and the airport. She will benefit by having more time to clean my office and consulting room. And I will benefit with less worry about her crashing the Lexus when I am not on board to offer her general driving guidance on her dead-heading journeys.

Oh gawd I've just fed the troll on the Haddington story but I've been away for a while.

I'm just sure you will get on the trams instead of the buses.

As for the other stuff, TROLL TROLL TROLL.

#11 I'm just sure you will get on the trams instead of the buses.

Highly unlikely as, apart from commercial flights, I have no need to use public transport.

I was up last month and the building works then did'nt look to great. So let alone what it will be like when it really starts. You have a really good cheap public transport service in the buses especially the flat £1 fare. This in contrast to London where it costs £4 to cross the city by tube. Why change something that works perfectly well. Except for possibly environmental reasons (emmissions) for the trams. There most have been problems with trams systems otherwise the original systems from the 1950's would not have been removed from cities in the UK.

Don't fret for Lothian buses.

I doubt they'll even notice the difference that one tramline is going to make to their business.

Now if it was environmental and value for money issues that were being considered I remember the old electric trolleybuses of the sixties.

How many of them could you've set up and run for the price of your tram from Leith to the Airport?
All that would've taken would've been some overhead wires and no roadworks.

Can't say I've heard much discussion on here looking at the relative merits of modern trolly bus mass transit systems particularly for a city as wee and as hilly as Edinburgh.

Did I hear Leonard Nimmoy had been booked to open the tramline when it's finished?
