Direct flight to NY launched

THE first ever direct flights between Edinburgh and New York were launched today.
Delta Air Lines will start the year-round service connecting the Capital to John F Kennedy airport from tomorrow.

UK commercial director Armin Venencie said: "We are delighted to offer our customers from Scotland the opportunity to fly nonstop to New York, the world's largest travel market and leading financial centre."

David Johnson, managing director of Edinburgh Airport, added: "The first ever direct service between Edinburgh and New York JFK is a fantastic addition to our route network and cause for celebration, giving our passengers greater choice and flexibility on transatlantic travel."

Continental has been doing a flight from EDI to EWR for ages. EWR is a cough and a spit away from downtown NY. So, since this is not the first Direct flight to the NY area, the story is basically rubbish.

Technically you are correct. Newark is indeed in New Jersey.

Used to live in Manhattan for 15 years and no one in their right mind would choose to fly in and out of JFK in order to visit New York City (Manhattan, Brooklyn, The Bronx, Staten Island and Queens).

Although JFK's in New York, it's much further out of the way from the 'big city' than Newark Airport is.

Newark's a giant hub that's a 25 minute cab or car ride from the heart of NYC (Times Square).

JFK's old and much further away - 45 minutes to and hour (if the traffic's not too bad).

There always seems to be a general assumtion that the final destination of airline passengers is the city they land in. Not all passengers flying the Edinburgh / Heahrow route will be terminating their journey in London or Edinburgh. Similarly, I would imagine some passengers using the new JFK service westbound might be transferring at JFK to onward destinations.
The Delta service is another useful addition to Edinburgh Airport's increasing international network. I wish it well.

#5.. Indeed, I shall be availing myself to this service
later this month flying IDA-SLC-JFK-EDI. The connection combinations between both CO's EDI-EWR and Delta's EDI-JFK are virtually endless. Pity Edinburgh Airport doesn't have a direct middle-east/Asia service
for other Worldwide connections. Perhaps a change of owner or sole BAA Edinburgh Airport ownership will change all that?

Yes,#5, I plan a visit next year and will land in London Gatwick airport but will go on from there to Scotland, Glasgow, and Stirling as well as other places. I,too, wish Delta well. And I,for one, have NO intention of ever visiting NY. Too too big and noisy and crime ridden. Rather visit Scotland.

#7 - if you object to noisy and crime-ridden you might want to re-think adding Glasgow to your itinerary! Edinburgh will be a breath of fresh air for you, though.
