RAIL passengers in Edinburgh are set to benefit from 106 new high-speed tilting rail carriages agreed for the West Coast Main Line.
The UK Government has placed an order with engineers Alstom to deliver more than 7420 extra seats on the route – which links Edinburgh to Manchester, Liverpool and Birmingham.

The new Pendolino carriages – which will create four new 11-car trains and lengthen 31 existing trains – should be in full service by December 2012.

There is an option to buy a further 42 carriages by 2013 to meet rising passenger numbers.

The line – which is currently undergoing a massive £8.8 billion overhaul – is set to see a 45 per cent increase in long-distance services in December this year.

UK Transport Secretary Ruth Kelly said: "The £8.8bn upgrade of the West Coast Main Line will cut journey times and deliver more frequent services."

A modified TGV did 357mph. The normal ones do 200mph---which I grant you is fast, but not as fast as a Bugatti Veyron.

#4:

424.6 mph actually. Please get your facts right!

#5 - yes comments have been disabled on that particular story. I wanted to get my penniesworth in - these deviants should be arrested - why did the police wait 25 minutes to deal with something that is totally offensive to public decency and would mentally scar the wee kiddies for life? Had it been two guys carrying out this disgusting act you can guarantee the riot squad would have been there within a few minutes. It's quite clear L&B plod favour heterosexuals.

How do you know you could do 424.6mph if you didn't live in a nanny state?

#2

Because the UK government is paying for it.

#5 Foo,

Yes, they've been disabled, as they have been on the topless sunbathing story yesterday. Bl00dy disgrace.

I wanted to ask. Does anyone have any more photos?

Should more be done to help traders affected by the ongoing tram works?
No, too many are just using them as an excuse to get cash.
I think they have been fairly treated on the whole.
Absolutely. All losses should be made good.
