PLANS to develop 11 mews houses on a plot in Broughton Street Lane have been put on hold to allow councillors to visit the site.
Developer Prosper Holdings wants to create the car-free development to cater for a lack of family homes in the Capital.

But the plans came under fire from members of the council's planning committee.

It was argued that the three-bed houses, described by one councillor as "matchboxes", were too small and unsuitable. Another councillor called the plan "a clear example of overdevelopment".

Council officials had recommended the plans be given the go-ahead, despite a similar application being refused in 2006 – and 24 objection letters from locals.

Given that Mews houses were traditionally the stable and carriagehouses, can a "car free" development really be sold as a Mews development?

Sounds great, doesn't it, the way the EN chooses to present this story? - "Developer Prosper Holdings wants to create the car-free development to cater for a lack of family homes in the Capital". What nice people, how thoughtful of them? No, an almost identical application for this site was refused on appeal by the Scottish Executive in 2006, after it had been already refused by Edinburgh Council's planning committee. And why "car-free"? Not for environmental reasons, but because there's no room for either integral garages or a car park on the site. There isn't room for 11 houses either, but these developers just don't want to give up.
