Massive regeneration for Leith Docks gets green light

THE MASSIVE regeneration of Leith Docks was today granted outline planning permission by city councillors.
The unanimous vote in favour followed a mammoth planning committee meeting.

The scheme - one of the biggest planning applications ever to come before the council, is designed to create thousands of jobs, generate billions of pounds in investment and make Edinburgh's waterfront a "world-class" destination over the next 20-30 years.

It features more than 15,000 new homes, a new secondary school for 1000 pupils, three primary schools for more than 1300 pupils, a swimming pool, sports hall, pitches and skatepark.

Those numbers don't make sense, surely if you're going to build primary schools for more than 1300 pupils, you should have the facilities for the same number at secondary, even if not all of them go to that secondary? And 15,000 homes will produce a heck of a lot more than 1300 children!

I don't fancy one swimming pool for that number of people!

95% of the new homes will probably be the same old tiny, massively expensive 1 or 2 bedroom flats for single people. No-one builds family homes in Edinburgh these days, unless they are in the suburbs and costing about half a million quid.

...oh, and if I hear one more thing that Edinburgh is building that is "world class", I think I will explode.

What, exactly, is "world class" about a few new hooses and a couple of ameneties. I can't see tourists flocking to Leith for this new "World Class" attraction.

More cash for trams.

The way the housing market is, the flats (if built) will either remain empty or be turned into social housing.

There are not going to be any new roads to get into the scheme so Leith will grind to a halt. It strikes me as an idiotic half baked scheme that puts profits and tram cash before sensibility.

#6 true enough!they are mostly tiny and way too expensive."penthouse"flats(or plain old multi stories)are ok for couples and single people but are not really practical for families

Forth Ports claimed that they would make the sun shine, animate the street life, create a hierachy of public spaces, zone areas as heritage sites and create monotone designs but I can hardly see that these proposals are any better. If Edinburgh is to become a dormitory I don't want to have to be the one to iron the sheets!! Persumably there will also be a cycle track all the way to Fife but still no mention of Social Housing or badly needed hospice provision. I dispair with the current planning process which seems to waiver any obligations for cheap housing. And this at a time when you can't open a newspaper without reading about the credit crunch and people's inability even to afford to eat let alone buy a house. The indoor market burnt down early one morning when there were few people to see and now we hear that expensive flats will be built. Bang goes the hope of a Renaissance Plaza, a cultural centre dedicated to Scottish Literature, a crystal fountain, a glass cathedral, an outdoor cinema, a global centre of world music, environmental sanitation in the year of sanitation etc etc etc the awfulness goes on and on....
