Fringe venue chief threatens to pull out

THE impresario in charge of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe's biggest venue is threatening to pull out unless a revamp of the building is shelved.
William Burdett-Coutts says he will withdraw from the festival by 2010 unless Edinburgh City Council scraps plans for the Assembly Rooms on George Street.

He has run shows there for 27 years, helping give Stephen Fry, Hugh Laurie, Emma Thompson
and Lenny Henry their big break.

But Mr Burdett-Coutts is battling plans to transform the Georgian landmark into a year-round arts and events venue.

Work will rule out its use in the 2011 festival, and Mr Burdett-Coutts claims the changes will leave him with three instead of the present six spaces for shows, and without the bulk of his lucrative bar operation.

Mr Burdett-Coutts has used the comedy festival brochure for a tirade against the council, claiming it failed to consult him about its plans and was forcing him out of business.

Mr Burdett-Coutts told The Scotsman: "I am simply stating the facts. We will not be able to keep going if we lose half of our operation in the Assembly Rooms."

Steve Cardownie, the city's festivals champion, dismissed claims of a lack of consultation as "complete nonsense" and said the council would be happy to put the right to run the Assembly Rooms during the Fringe out to tender.

So Burdett-Coutts wants to leave the OUR Assembly Rooms alone so that he can run his annual 5 week cashfest. The alternative is to transform OUR Assembly Rooms to possibly making money all year round and give other promoters and producers a chance.

On this occasion Slimeball Cardownie is 100% right - let's see if he sticks to it or backs down.

Oh dear... POOR Mr. Burdett-Coutts, his money making machine is going to be tinkered with: His 'lucrative bar' will have to shrink... and the venue MIGHT even be put out to 'COMPETITIVE TENDER'!Why oh why wasn't the venue put out to competitive tender 26 YEARS AGO when it was fairly obvious that the venue was indeed the jewel in the crown of the centre of the city.

I am PUZZLED AND CONCERNED at the simple fact that our Council have yet again failed to capitalise ON THE FULL COMMERCIAL VALUE of the venue during argueably one of the most famous arts, culture and commedy festivals in the World...and the same entrepeneur has had the use of the same venue for 27 years? INCREDIBLE.

Time for AUDIT SCOTLAND to get involved and lets have a clear and open investigation into the finances, relationships and full commercial potential of the venue.

And for Mr. Burdett-Coutts - after 27 years of making large amounts of money from the heavily Council subsidised Fringe and a high profile attempt to become independent - (Which will be interesting to quantify later this year) methinks Mr. Burdett-Coutts should be able to either move on or go into artistic retirement.

Charity and voluntary organisations across the city have had to endure draconian cuts due to a massive Council deficit... the Council owns the venue - if they can get a PENNY more that is being currently paid for the busiest weeks of the year - PUT THE VENUE OUT TO COMPETITIVE TENDERING.. with effect from 2009! Thereafter increase the rental to help cover the costs of the extensive refit!

Mr B-C claims he was consulted about the Assembly Rooms plans and was forcing him out of business...... I am a user of the Rooms for events every year and they have been up front telling me all about it's plans and when they are taking place so I don't know how he doesn't know.. toys out the pram methinks ...

Goodbye and good riddance William you will not be missed - You leaving might allow someone who is passionate about the Arts and not money run Assembley.

Has the Fringe ticket fiasco put you off going to see shows at the festival?
Yes, I don’t want to risk losing money for nothing.
No, a little bit of hassle is worth the quality
I was already put off by unaffordable ticket prices
