COUNCIL chiefs have agreed to waive fees for traders in the West End staging an open-air street market.
Plans have been lodged for a small market of 12 stalls on Stafford Street for the sale of "high-end arts and crafts" to attract customers. The move comes after businesses claimed they were struggling to cope with losses of up to 60 per cent due to the closure of Shandwick Place for tram works.

The council has now agreed to waive the usual £708 fee for a market operator's licence after a request from The West End Traders association.

Councillor Colin Keir, convener of the city's regulatory committee, said the move was to recognise the proactive approach adopted by traders in the face of difficulties caused by tram work. Trams firm TIE is also running an "open for business" campaign to promote Edinburgh during the disruption.

Other initiatives under consideration include Month of Sundays, a four-week programme of cultural events and food markets.

Edinburgh today, going from Minto Street to Princes Street was a complete disaster.

I hope the traders get very angry and stay very angry at the mess Edinburgh authorities have created. They can' be making much in profits!

That was due to a fatal accident this morning. Nothing to do with the Trams.

The "open for business" campaign run by TIE is really punchy (not). A few plastic signs stuck onto wire fences round the holes...if you were put off coming into the city by the thought of the disruption, you won't see the signs anyway.
