Axed bike parking infuriates council staff

AROUND one-third of cycle parking spaces are temporarily unavailable at the City Chambers – to the anger of some council employees.
Twelve of the 33 spaces at the main quadrangle have been removed to make way for an open-air exhibition based on the work of city design champion Sir Terry Farrell.

But one council worker said: "Giving us no notice whatsoever, we turned up for wor
k as usual to find that one-third of the cycle parking had been stopped to allow for a giant poster.

"The cycle parking is already bursting at the seems here – if you turn up late for work you are lucky to get a spot at the best of times.

"There is nowhere else nearby.

"Ironically, it was Bike Week last week and the council hosted its annual bike breakfast in that very quadrangle to help promote cycling to work. But many of us are currently struggling to cycle to work for the council as there is nowhere to lock our bikes when we get there.

"But the Lord Provost's car can still get in there, so that's OK."

City transport leader Phil Wheeler said: "This temporary exhibition is only running for four weeks.

"While some bike parking spaces are being affected, the majority are still available and we will be back to full capacity very soon.

"The council is constantly improving cycling facilities and recently installed 100 new parking racks across the city, with more being planned."

This goes against the Lib Dem's policy of making Edinburgh a flagship cycle friendly city. Of course it sounded good in the manifesto, but we still want to know how they are going to achieve it. It is simply not good enough to say it is "only" for four weeks when staff need to get to work every day and smacks of a couldn't care less attitude. As for counting cycle parking racks elsewhere in the city, is he suggesting cyclists should walk instead?

It doesn't matter what means of transport you use to get to work, you are going to have problems finding a secure place to leave it once you get there.

This anti-car, anti-everything attitude of the council really stinks.

well done to the council, something constructive for a change, but please don't stop there, get rid of all the cycle parking spaces.

presume the Coucil have applied for planning permission to put up these boards in Edinburgh World Heritage Site, presume the build is Listed in some way

But it could only be the council that reduces Cycling Parking during National Cycle Week....amazed NOT.

But at least the Provosts car could park ?...Double standards me thinks...they tell us Edinburgh has an excellent award winning bus service, so why do they need a fancy limo?

Pathetic response, exactly how to make matters worse, Wheeler would have been better just holding his hands up and saying sorry, we'll be more considerate another time.

"This temporary exhibition is only running for four weeks." What about notifying staff in advance or trying to find an equally temporary alternative?

"While some bike parking spaces are being affected, the majority are still available and we will be back to full capacity very soon." If it's overcrowded and you take away any at all then it's a big deal!

"The council is constantly improving cycling facilities and recently installed 100 new parking racks across the city, with more being planned."
Your point being.....?

[16] Agreed, they should be notifying staff in advance.

That sets a dangerous precent tho, next time it'll be a "consulatation" and we all know how long they run for, cost in inflated fees and decide, well, decide nothing actually.

It must be murder working in these offices with all these smelly, sweating cyclists sitting there absolutely honking and all their dirty, sweaty gear draped round the radiators. All this in the pretence of fitness when we all know that they are a miserable bunch of so and sos who are saving the bus fare. Must be a mad scramble for the exit when a collection gets passed round the office.

One man's infuriated cyclist is another man's enraged book fest organiser.

I'm incandescent and yet sanguine. Please help.

its all well and good saying 'use your bike' but if you cant park it at your destination, for what ever reason, its hardly viable now is it.

a bus doesn't need parking and is the simplest mass transit system to leave (just walk away) in the centre of a busy town, its not like the centre of Edinburgh isn't well served with over crowded mobile asylums (buses)

not so good if you wish to travel further afield mind

clearly 'use your bike week' wasn't thought through but again that's hardly a surprise as its mainly a sound bite not a solution (not in Edinburgh at least)

Secure (and preferably covered) bike parking isn't difficult: you put in rows of D-shaped (on its side) stands called Sheffield stands.

When the council makes car-commuting more difficult and expensive as it needs to, measures like this should be in place and established.

cyclist could of course just use their high horse to commute with, seems every one of the tax evading road users has one to spout there opinion from

if only there was more parking spaces for bikes they would be better, if only cars didnt pollute and there where more spaces they would be fine 2 or roads where bigger or people could fly or... if people didnt feel the need to work in large corporations for personal gain that might work as well

if only people supported my point of view (however informed) then it would be all roses and honey

it just isnt like that, e.g. disabled people have the right to transport too, as do old people, as do families , i have tried getting a lawnmower on a push bike but its isnt viable

With these great big B@£$... of hills throughou Embra, it's one of the least cycle friendly in the UK.
I should know - I struggle up them every evening on me bike!
