Published Date: 13 February 2008
RUNRIG have been unveiled as the latest act due to perform at Edinburgh Castle this summer. The legendary Scottish band were one of the first to play the Castle when they performed to a sell-out crowd in 1991.
And now the band, who also played the Esplanade in 1993, are set to return as part of a star-studded series of concerts.

The Proclaimers have already sold all 8500 tickets for their performance in July, less than two weeks after tickets went on sale.

And Boyzone tickets are also selling fast, with organisers hopeful of another sell-out gig in the 2008 Castle Concert series.

This will be Runrig's first Capital performance for nearly seven years, with their last Edinburgh gig delighting a packed house at the Usher Hall in 2001. And organisers are confident the band will still be a major draw. Barry Wright, director of organisers Castle Concerts, was "delighted" at the band's Castle return.

"Runrig are a Scottish legend," he said. "Over the years we have taken them from Stirling Castle to the banks of Loch Lomond, from Orkney to Hawick, from Benbecula to Dumfries – there is no part of Scotland Runrig don't reach.

"And now they are playing Edinburgh Castle in what we hope will be yet another special evening for fans."

While they might not have the following they enjoyed in the 1990s, when they were arguably Scotland's biggest band, Runrig are still going strong.

The folk-rock band was founded by brothers Rory and Calum MacDonald and their friend Blair Douglas in 1973 in the Hebrides , and played their first concert in Glasgow's Kelvin Hall.

Lead singer Donnie Munro left in 1997, and keyboard player Pete Wishart left in 2001. The MacDonald brothers still lead the band, performing with guitarist Malcolm Jones, drummer Iain Bayne, guitarist Bruce Guthro and keyboard player Brian Hurren.

Last year saw them celebrate the Highland Year of Culture with Beat The Drum, an all-day festival on the shores of Loch Ness, drawing a crowd of 17,000.

They also teamed up with the Tartan Army to re-record their single Loch Lomond, for Children in Need, a release which broke into the UK Top 10, beating the Spice Girls' official Children in Need song and staying No 1 in the Scottish singles chart for seven weeks.

The band have also just released their 13th studio album Everything You See, which has been a huge chart success in Scandinavia and Germany.

A spokesperson for Historic Scotland said: "With this third announcement for concerts at Edinburgh Castle this summer, we have established a thoroughly entertaining line-up to provide a lively, atmospheric evening."

• Tickets for Runrig go on sale this Friday at 9am.

Aren't Runrig getting a wee bit past their sell-by?

Be interesting to see whether they sell-out.

They weren't that popular even in their hey day.

Honestly I wasn't one but didn't 45,000 turn up at Loch Lomond once.

What one was a teacher at Tynecastle school again.
Bet old Ross MacRae will never do an outdoor concert if he graduates.

The Evening News should ban some of you who comment on here are you appear uneducated and illiterate.

Whether you like or dislike Runrig it is good for Edinburgh.

Yes runrig were sell out in their day and still have a following.

It's down to choice you don't have to go see them same as they don't have to go see bands you actually do like. Oh sorry are there any or are you still watching the flowerpot men and not grown up yet as some of you sound as if you haven't!

You are really on form Paul.

19 I guess it comes down to sophistication. Runrig to me were the 90s version of Jimmy Shand , shortbread music bascially , you go along sing your wee heart out about scotland then go back to your drudgery.

They [;ayed it well though, Personally I think its childish to have the kind of taste that puts up with this tosh.

Thats a true story about the inlaws by the way.

In the last year I've seen Snow Patrol, Franz Ferdinand, Razorlight, the Killers, T in the Park and RUNRIG live and Runrig were by far the most amazing live band of them all. I was like a lot of the comments on here. Runrig=80s hasbeens, tartan tat. etc. How wrong I was!! This band ROCK and blew me away! They sold out 18,000 at Loch Ness last summer so 8,000 at the castle will go in a flash. All you synics - don't believe the (anti-)hype. Come along and check out one of the best live bands around.
26

The Genuine Mario Antoinette,

I-ll give them a listen. Good retort.

#26 - Glad to hear you will give them a listen.

You never know you might just like them!! Maybe not but respect those who do.

Happy listening!

This is a really bad article with some infantile responses. If you don't like them fair enough but
people who do like them don't want to know what you think
so why bother posting.
What I would like to have seen in the article is not just
when the tickets go on sale but when the event is and how much it costs?

shug65,

Glasgow 13/02/2008 22:44:51
Runrig hasbeens I dont think so, they can still sell out, they are a great band, very entertaining, after all why would thousands of people stand up to our ankles in a muddy field in hellish rain for hours. people come from all over to see them, America, Germany, Denmark and even England to name a few. Roll on July 26. Hope it's drier than Drumnadroakit.

The Genuine Mario Antoinette,

Tried it but they sound awfully like a christian rock band to me.

Sorry, not for me.

And the idea of standing in a field wearing a scotland top singing "youll take the high road" doesnt sound like fun.

Still each to their own.
