Lights go out as Castle joins big switch-off across Europe

EDINBURGH Castle is set to be plunged into darkness this evening when the floodlighting is switched off as part of a Europe-wide event.
Major landmarks across the continent are also taking part, including the Colosseum, Trevi Fountain and Pantheon in Rome, the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the Foreign Office building in London and Athens' Lycabettus Hill and City Hall.

The five-minute "lights out" from 6pm is part of an energy-saving event to mark the third anniversary of the Kyoto Protocol coming into force.

A spokesman for Friends of the Earth said: "This a great symbolic gesture to raise awareness of climate change and we hope it gets noticed by the people of Edinburgh and in other cities around the world.

"While the act itself won't do very much to tackle climate change, it will at least highlight the issue.

"It's important to realise that there are very few buildings around the world that are heavily illuminated in this fashion with electric lighting, but what's more important is that we cut down on needless lighting in other places and in our day-to-day lives."

Barbara Smith, executive manager at the Castle, said that it took part in a wide range of energy saving initiatives.

Why not switch them off permanently to save money and cut light pollution?

5 Minutes !

So what

What about a law that all businesses must switch off lights every night.
Swicth off stair wells at night.
Switch off the Road lights at 2AM
Personally I see no need for street lighting other that severe weather.

Switch off anything that your not using? Doh

Typical SNP/libdem response - the tourists expect to see the castle lit up - another failure by this new administration - roll on the next election.

#4 - you talk about switching lights off in stairwells at night, road lights at 2am, etc - what about the workers that get up/go home in the early hours? Why should they stumble in a dark close? Or drive in the dark?

I take it you work Monday to Friday 9 til 5?

What a stupid idea.

#6. Do what their ancestors did and eat lots of carrots. Use torches to find the car outside the house -- even the wind-up non battery variety are not expensive nowadays. I don't think #4 means they should drive with their car lights off, and you don't need street lighting to see the road in addition to your headlights. Light pollution has started to destroy night time animal habits and disorients them. And one of the joys of going to the very far north of Scotland at night was to get away from that unsightly red glow on the horizon. Savour what you've got compared to the urbanised south of this island.

All street light and other lights in public areas need to be equipped with motion detector switches. After 3 or 4 minutes with no motion, the lights would switch off. Then when the light detects "motion", it would switch on.
