Crowds set to flock to free days at Castle

HISTORIC Scotland has warned that Edinburgh Castle is likely to be packed with thousands of visitors taking advantage of the chance to see the attraction for free this weekend.
The Castle has again been included among the list of Historic Scotland properties taking part in their Free Weekend on Saturday and Sunday.

Last year more than 25,000 people visited the Castle as part of the event, and it is expected to be one of the most popular attractions again this year.

The heritage body warned there would almost certainly be queues at peak times and suggested people may even have to come back at a less busy time.

The Historic Scotland Free Weekend has been running for more than ten years, with more than 600,000 people visiting historic sites.

Peter Bromley, director of properties in care for Historic Scotland, said: "It's a fantastic opportunity for people to gain an insight into the incredible history of the nation and have a great day out."

It is about time Historic Scotland let the locals in for free or a discounted entry at any time of the year.

This is the case if you goto many attractions over the world as long as you can prove you are a local.

Considering the population of Edinburgh is now largely foreign perhaps if you speak with a Scots twang you should be allowed into places such as the castle for nothing?

Why should we pay to visit something that our country built??

Why does it have the title Historic Scotland?

Why do they exercise a policy of not re-roofing buildings?

Why do they feminise, parody and pastiche our traditional dress at the castle?

Why do they charge a fortune for locals?

Fundamentally it is because Historic Scotland is a colonial institution which promotes the deterioration and insult of our culture.

#2 I agree it's about time but I sense a sneaky catch here somewhere. When the Stane O Destiny was returned to Scotland I went to see it with my family and the entrance fee on that weekend was free. But what they didn't say was that you were only allowed to visit the chapel and you couldn't even take pictures or film. I've never been inside the actual castle because athough I was born five minutes from the castle and was brought up and lived in Edinburgh all my life it's always been too expensive.
They should give discounts to people with Scottish birth certificates or simply let us in for free because it is our basic right to gain access to our heritage. Just like the Covenanter's prison in greyfriars, yoou only get in by paying and you only get in at night.

No its not. Your only rights in this world is that to breath! Anything else you have to gain, usually through hard work!

So, stop moaning, all get a job, then you can afford to visit the caslte. Quite simple. Its not yours, or mine. The world doesnt owe you anything.

7. You live in Balerno yet you cant scrape a tenner to get in to the castle ? Then you complain that it should be free all the time EVEN THOUGH YOU HAVE A PERFECT OPPORTUNITY to get in for nothing ?!

There are hundreds of other buildings open this weekend, go and see some of them instead of the castle please. Go and learn a bit more about edinburgh adn some of its history and institutions.

Stirling Castle is/was free to locals, but if Edinburgh is so much more popular they probably think this would cause problems, but after an initial surge (which could be off-peak season) would it really? How many times would any individual choose to go? Might increase pride in our City a bit even having the option.

Trying to load their website, to see where else to take the kids rather than the Castle - unfortunately it doesnt seem to be able to cope with the volume of us free loading, no council tax paying, no income tax paying, no birthright locals!!
