Castle guides kilted out in new uniforms

EDINBURGH Castle guide Laura Groves shows off her new uniform, which has just been unveiled by Historic Scotland.


The outfit, which all the guides will wear, was created in time for this year's tourism season and includes the new Edinburgh Castle Tartan – designed by the heritage body earlier this year.

The distinctive grey, green and red-checked design, which was created by Edinburgh kiltmaker Howie Nicholsby, from Geoffrey (Tailor) and 21st Century Kilts, is the first tartan designed for the attraction and will be worn by all of the Castle's visitor services staff.

Mr Nicholsby said: "It is a really stunning tartan and one that will help give the Castle a new lease of life."

The new tartan is part of a branding initiative set up by Historic Scotland last year.

I've had the pleasure over the last years in taking foreign friends round the castle. The guides are great, full of humour and valid, interesting information - you do a wonderful job people. Just hope the male guides don't have to wear thigh/knee length boots! What's next - frilly nickers?

Whats with the goth cross dressing ?

Women wear the druggit skirt and men wear the kilt and sporran.

Obviously more feminising of our tough traditions and dress.

If traditional is to be worn, it has to be.......traditional.

Fashion and tradition don't mix, when they do it's called fashion.

Those boots are awful. The outfit itself isn't too bad but those boots look like what the ladies of the night might wear. Traditional outfit would be great but this outfit is far from traditional. If you won't ditch the modern look, at least get rid of the hooker boots. They are really trashy.

I reserve judgement - if it means that the male guides will actually wear kilts as opposed to the breeks I normally see there all well and good, but Historic Scotland already has a perfectly good tartan so I wonder if this is going to be unique just to Edinburgh Castle or not.

I like the tartan, but agree with McClef...why not use the perfectly good Historic Scotland tartan?
The kilt and sporran is a man's garment. Surely female employees could be fitted with a proper skirt.
I agree with #6 and #7 re the boots. And that has to be the most unfortunate camera angle I've ever seen.
It would be splendid to see male employees at all the HS sites in kilts. On my last visit to Scotland I was somewhat surprised to see so few kilted visitor service professionals at HS sites. In fact, I'm not sure I recall seeing any.
#3...not every American visitor is as uninformed and rubish as you seem to imply.

I forgot to add...Duncan in Edinburgh..."the bad kind of stunning" is the best line I've seen in a long time. Cheers!
