Supermarket plan scrapped in new Porty blueprint

A NEW blueprint for the development of north-west Portobello has been finalised by council chiefs.
The brief, which covers around 17 hectares of land, including the Baileyfield Industrial Estate and the former ScottishPower site, will be used as guidance when deciding on future planning applications at the site.

Following a lengthy consultation exercise, the council has taken onboard a series of recommendations from the community.

This includes scrapping plans for a metro-type supermarket on the High Street, ditching proposals for a five-storey development on the Promenade, and putting plans to move the library and community centre on hold.

City planning leader Jim Lowrie said: "North west Portobello has been in need of regeneration for some time and it is important to ensure that any development will be sympathetic to the immediate area."

Councillors will be asked to approve the brief at a meeting next week.

Odd then that the council approved Caltongate - hardly sympathetic to the World Heritage Site!
