TWO community newspapers are being wound up after city councillors voted to slash their funding.
The West Edinburgh Times and the Gorgie Dalry Gazette have issued redundancy notices to staff, and three other papers are also understood to be struggling financially.

The Lib Dem/SNP administration is reducing its grant to the Edinburgh Community
Newspaper Trust this year by 75 per cent – down from £127,100 to £31,775.

The Chronicle, South Edinburgh Echo and North Edinburgh News will still receive money from the Government's Fairer Scotland Fund for at least six months, and hope to continue operating while that money is coming in.

But in an article in the West Edinburgh Times, the newspaper blasts the council for the "shabby way" it has treated community newspapers, many of which have been published for over 30 years.

Labour group leader Ewan Aitken said today: "At a stroke, this administration has removed a service for thousands of people across Edinburgh."

But city finance leader Gordon Mackenzie said: "These newspapers were supposed to find alternative funding five years ago but continued to received substantial subsidy.

"We will work to ensure that information is provided to local people in a fair and equal manner across the city."

perhaps Cllr Mackenzie should ask his officials, who were working alongside the Community Newspapers deveopling a business plan.. to be than stabbed in the back and ignore all that work to massively 'dis-invest' in community newspapers - why dot you 'dis-invest' in the crappy outlook magazine sent to a few hundred thousand people buming up the council services - now theres a waste of money, or the EBS newsletters - full colour 4-6 pages, why - do we care - just get your jons done

I thought for a moment it was going to be the Hootsman and EEN - it's only a matter of time, given their dire performance in the last year and more.

Besides, what has Dawe got to say about this?

MORE REDUNDANCIES IN EDINBURGH and JENNY DAWE is yet again nowhere to be seen! She'd be the first to be bleating about tourist numbers in the town - what about the locals though?

They should all shut unless their readers or advertisers are willing to pay for them.

They are just ink elephants.

Shame to lose the Gorgie Dalry Gazette. Always worth a quick read.

I'd like to see the Herald and Post wound up though. There's never anything worth reading and it seems to be 90% adverts. It's really just junk mail that clutters up letterboxes and wastebins.

#1 The headline got my hopes up for a couple of seconds there.

They surely would not close The Edinburgh Evening Ritchey?
