AN 87-YEAR-OLD disabled grandfather today told how he has been burgled around a dozen times in the last three years – by the same thief.
Renowned zoologist Murdoch Mitchison, who lives near Ormiston in East Lothian, said he has been targeted up to 12 times since 2006 and police believe the same burglar could be behind all the raids.

The widower said a total of £1,000, several bottles of whisky, a mobile phone, electric screwdrivers and two computers have been stolen over the years.

The most recent theft took place on Sunday, when Mr Mitchison's computer was stolen from his bungalow, where he lives alone. The pensioner's keyboard and monitor were left behind.

Mr Mitchison, a father-of-four, said: "My cleaning lady told me that the computer was missing at about nine o'clock on Sunday morning, and I thought 'not again'. I don't know how the thief gets in."

The former Professor of Zoology at Edinburgh University, whose wife Rosalind – the pioneering social historian – died in 2002, uses a walking stick and occasionally a wheelchair.

His concerned daughter Amanda Mitchison, who lives in Bristol, said: "My father is fairly immobile and he is really old and frail.

"He is hard of hearing and the burglaries usually take place when he is sleeping. It is a huge number of burglaries and he is a vulnerable person. At times he gets pretty rattled.

"One of our fears is what if my father came out of the bedroom when the thief was there – would he be pushed over?"

The 50-year-old added: "My father has a security pad that he needs for the carers, so the thief might get in that way if he knows the code."

The bungalow has a number of French windows which the family have now padlocked.

Mr Mitchison also claimed there had been several other burglaries in the neighbourhood.

The grandfather-of-14, whose father Dick was a former Labour MP and peer and mother Naomi a renowned writer, said: "I have never caught the thief before.

"My doors are always locked now, and we have changed the locks on a couple of occasions."

A police spokesman said: "We are aware of several house- breakings that have occurred at Mr Mitchison's property over the last few years, and on each occasion a thorough and detailed investigation has been carried out.

"During this time our officers have also been in regular contact with Mr Mitchison and his family, and the appropriate security advice has been offered as to how the property can be protected.

"We are appealing for anyone who can assist our inquires to come forward."

Seems like someone he knows may be involved in this - how else would a thief know the code to gain entry to his house? Over to you, PC Plod.

I really feel for this old chap.

Sounds like the work of junkies.

If the police we're obsessed with being the first in the line at Greggs, perhaps they'd have realised this and fingerprinted all the local known junkies.

I hope they catch the scum that are doing this and lock them up for a long time.

How does your cleaner gain access?

Does she have her own key.....?

Who does she mix with when not working?

I'm not keen on padlocking windows, what if there is a fire?

To rely on the police would mean crediting them with some common sense and motivation to get out of their comfy chairs. This seems an impossible dream.

Foo - perhaps you could help identify and catch the lousy thief??

As you live in Tranent, you're not far from Ormiston, and you could go on night watch for a few weeks.

Don't know what you're talking about; sounds as if the poppers have gone to your head. Anyway, shouldn't you still be worrying about the other days public toilet story?

This is where the yanks have thr right of it: vulnerable people should be armed and trained so that they can defend themselves against home invaders. Sadly our country is so opposed to basic freedoms that we cannot legally do this.

Something I'd consider is to link a concealed motion-activated camera to another, well hidden, computer. The most basic computer will be able to handle this and the whole setup ought to cost less than one hundred Pounds.

Once there's video, Plod ought to be able to track down the serial criminal and have him caged.

# 19 Heedbanger,

I think you'll find that residents of Tranent are traditionally known as 'belters'.

F. knows why.

Maybe something to do with horses after all.

30

Ecto,

04/11/2009 13:22:41
#19 Tranent has a rich and diverse community which includes people who are fond of horses (and other four leggede beasts) yes, but no worse than anywhere else.

Its the cleaning lady. Its so obvious. Hang her on the national lottery then quarter her and put remains on bridges in Ormiston , Penicuik , Dalkeith and some other rubbish place to deter theivery.

Even if she is innocent we must do this.

Does the cleaning lady happen to have a teenage son/daughter at home, who could have easily copied the key and has perhaps even been to the house and seen the code being keyed in?

If so, do they have unexplained possessions beyond their means?

I hope the poor old guy isn't insured with PRUDENTIAL. I was burgled in May, the guy is behind bars and today 6 months later, I get a letter from them saying the claim has been rejected. How can they get away with this, it seems to be a Post Code lottery, however, they dont care where you live when you pay them every year do they......
47

Tracie,

Leith 05/11/2009 11:57:25
And Lothian & Borders Police, what a joke they are. The guy in charge of the case hasn't even been to the house and the beat bobbies who arrived after the break in asked if we were insured and when we told them we did have insurance they said "well you will be ok, we wont even bother looking for your stuff"...... And it seems the reason the claim has been rejected is because the police report does not match the insurance loss adjusters report... Funny that..... No door to doors were done except by myself.....
