Define irony.
Cllr Rust proposes 'express lane' for Edinburgh street. The same street that is seeing its pavements being narrowed to allow for a transport scheme he voted for.
Couldn't make it up, unless you worked for the EEN.

Well, that confirms it - Rust really is an idiot. When you read the article, he's not actually done anything about his latest attention seeking-nonsense, he just "said he is considering launching a motion to councillors". Nevertheless, the EEN Newshounds lap it up like a dug returning to its own vomit.

This is of course a silly idea. But what I'd like to see are some signs at bus stops, on Princes Street and on the Bridges, pointing out to people that at least part of the pavement needs to be kept free for people to walk down. It is a source of unnecessary stress for many pedestrians that the pavements are blocked simply because people don't think about where they are standing.

This is a good idea, but as you'd expect, it's not been thought through.
Fast/slow lanes don't take into account the variety of pavement traffic.
It needs to ne more like the Autobahn, likesay, with these lanes in descending order of speed:
6. Bicycles, skateboards, mopeds.
5. Runners, joggers, fast walkers.
4. Medium pace (office worker, local on errand)
3. Shopper pace (slow, but not too slow)
2 Tourist pace (slow, unpredictable movemments)

Or an 8 foot high divider that would mean those wanting to shop would have to be on the inside and those wanting to build up a bit of speed would walk on the outside?

#105 You'll have to ditch the buggy and get a Papoose. I'm still worried about the emergency stop - what is the breaking distance for Hush Puppies?
#103 No worries Fido. I'll have you neutered and they'll be no hanky panky. Just Sensible Walking in the correct lane! SIT!

Too late Kirsty, I'm off for a good sniff around that great ventral orifice you call Edinburgh.
Jasper, if you don't get your tea on Saturday, run like hell!
On second thoughts Moira, maybe I won't. A dog has to have some pleasures in life besides writing. Did I tell you I'm writing a new novel? It will be called The Puppies Karamazov.

Good idea. Women are always telling us that they are better at multi-tasking, but for some reason they can't manage to get along the pavement in Princes Street without zig-zagging, stopping, suddenly waving and pointing without bothering about nearly taking people's eyes out and just generally being a nuisance.
I can walk along in a straight line at a good pace and see what is in the windows, why can't you burds do the same?!

#117 ... harsh!! I'd be worried if I felt like walking at a medium pace ... too fast for the slow lane, but holding back the fast lane. Maybe I'll need to get a skateboard or at least those trainers with the wheels on them.

where's R P McMurphy when you need him? 08/10/2008 00:10:13
Seriously though, I don't know who to be more bemused by or annoyed at.
Cllr Rust for raising such a numbwit idea ... it failed when tried in Oxford street - so his idea isn't even original - its just a recycled bad idea.
... OR Transport leader Phil Wheeler for saying he is willing to listen to all suggestions. Wheelie and Twoolie - Megaman Phil should have slapped JR down, no not slapped - smited.
Probably the worst offender re the express lane to Edinburgh being a laughing stock is Graham Bell. You would expect a spokesman for the Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce to be a little bit more grounded, lets say; for him to describe a Princes Street express lane as a "fantastic idea"...means Bellboy is also off his chump.
At least Rust can have is metaphorical microphone faded out if the electorate don't vote for him - but the other two gravy-trainers need to publicly apologise for being nimrods. Somebody please launch THAT motion to councillors.

Could someone from TIE or the council take a look at this strategy from 1940.

Whilst some may be more than content to wander aimlessly down Princes Street being bombarded by the legions of charity muggers weilding clipboards and neon anoraks, or pausing to look into those oh-so authentic tourist shops, or having free papers thrust in their face, I prefer to get where I am going. And quickly.
Being stuck behind dawdlers is more than frustrating and if something can be done about it, great.
Councillors can't be expected to tackle huge issues; it's not in their remit. Leave that to Holyrood and let's not criticise a councillor who is at least trying to do something useful for the community.
