Students face car headache

STUDENTS are to be prevented from parking their cars in residential streets near Queen Margaret University.
East Lothian Council has won its battle to have a £15,000 permit scheme introduced in the area surrounding the Musselburgh campus – giving householders priority parking.

The council proposed the idea last February, but received more than 500 objections. But on referral of the plan to the Government, the parking permit scheme was this week approved.

I was under the impression that these were public roads and that no one has a right to park outside their property. let the residents build driveways if they have a problem.

Exactly #1. People seem to forget that a road is for the movement of traffic, and there is not some god-given right for motorists to abandon their cars on one.

Perhaps if the so-called "green university" had built a big enough car park for it's staff and students in the first place, then the Musselburgh local residents wouldn't have the problems they're experiencing just now! All QMUC have done is moved their own carbon footprint onto the doorsteps of their neighbours - and won environmental awards in the process. Bl***y hypocrites!

The university showed it's support for the community by washing it's unclean hands over parking and advising people now to "call the police" when there is an issue. Being told by our educted students and tutors to "F**k @ff" whan asked not park bodes well for our educated future.

And don't even ask about the light pollution or impact wildlife.

Just heard 35 job losses amongst the teaching staff. At least that will create 35 more parking spaces.

i live about 15 min walk from uni if u walk fast & i canny park my car in at my house. I want a permit too!

There are buses, 2 railway stations one next to the building, the other a short walk away.
Also what about the bike, if it is really a green university they would encourage this.
Anyway how can it be 'green' when it has been built on productive agricultural land which used to grow greens.

There should have been parking facilities built in during the planning phase to minimise the impact upon local residents. Because this was not considered staff and students simply park as near to the university as possible and in doing so force home owners and tenants to park considerable distances from their homes. This is not ideal as there are a number of elderly residents who find it difficult to walk such distances. At least the permit scheme will benefit our elderly population and force the university to consider community relations.

It always amazes me that 'hard-up students' can seemingly afford to run cars. I certainly couldn't have managed that when I was at uni...
